Slip on your shades, grab a glass of lemonade and check back each weekday over the next week and a half as we present you each Song Of The Summer contender.
The next contender in our competition has mastered the art of creating perfect summer smashes! Ever since his debut with 2007′s I Created Disco LP, Calvin Harris has been steadily churning dance-worthy hits like nobody’s business. His latest single from his upcoming album, “Summer” (could the title be any more fitting?) encapsulates everything we’ve come to love from the DJ/producer: Soothing vocals (courtesy of Harris himself), infectious synths and an all-around vibrancy that is bound to keep your feet moving all through the warm months ahead.
Calvin Harris’ popularity escalates higher and higher with each passing year, and it’s fun to watch. No one can deny the impact of Rihanna‘s 2011 mega-hit “We Found Love,” which propelled the Scottish producer to international stardom. His recent festival favorites include his collaboration with Ne-Yo for “Let’s Go,” “I Need Your Love” featuring Ellie Goulding, “Thinking About You” with Ayah Marar, “Sweet Nothing” with Florence Welch and, arguably the biggest one of all, the career-boosting “Feel So Close.” Oh, did we mention these tunes all come from 18 Months, Harris’ third studio album? How impressive is that?
But it doesn’t stop there! Harris understands the art of dance music down to science, especially when it comes to producing for other artists. He is the man behind Kylie Minogue‘s X smash “In My Arms,” as well as Rihanna’s epic single “Where Have You Been.” Harris’ most recent production is Rita Ora‘s new single “I Will Never Let You Down,” which has already topped the UK chart.
Harris has enjoyed chart success stateside, but “Summer” is shaping up to be to be his biggest hit in America. Since its release back in March, the song recently broke into the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100, where it currently hangs on at its peak of #9. This makes it his third Top 10 single following “We Found Love” and “Sweet Nothing.” In total, “Summer” has spent a total of 11 long weeks on the charts so far! On the iTunes digital chart, the song is holding down the #8 position and the official video has been viewed almost 64 million times on YouTube.
Speaking of the video (released on April 7), Harris shows no problem with amping up the sex factor! The visuals take place in a Southern California desert that is filled with beautiful women, as they frolic in lingerie and lead a drag race. While we’re on the subject, why don’t we just take a brief a moment to admire this behind-the-scenes gem from his Instagram below? (Harris is actually not shirtless in the video…he’s such a tease.)
Calvin Harris’ genius method of producing spectacular dance anthems has succeeded once again, as “Summer” proves to be a strong contender — and possibly even the theme song— that can win our Song Of The Summer competition! From intimate rooftop parties to massive music festivals, the song’s euphoric formula seems likely to match up with any hot-weather occasion.
So, will “Summer” be a mainstay for the upcoming season? What do you think?
