After almost two months of speculation, an NFL source confirmed to Billboard today that Katy Perry will be the musical star at the Super Bowl halftime show in Glendale this winter.

It had been previously reported that Perry was on a shortlist of stars the National Football League had considered for the marquee performance, which offers artists a shot at performing in front the massive Super Bowl audience, which last year was 108 million viewers. The other two artists reportedly under consideration were Rihanna and Coldplay.

The National Football League, which rakes in billions of dollars of revenue each year, had considered asking the artists to “pay to play,” that is, actually requiring the artists to pay the NFL for the privilege of performing. However, Perry appeared on ESPN’s College Game Day last Saturday, she coyly remarked, “I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl,” whatever that means.

Until about 2011, the Super Bowl halftime shows featured performers that were well out of their prime, and usually white. Nor scrubs, mind you — legends like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, U2, Aerosmith, etc. But in the past few years, NFL execs have taken a look at their kids’ Spotify favorites and booked some mainstream, currently hot acts. Last year’s Bruno Mars/Red Hot Chili Peppers backing-track-apolooza was a spectacular-looking performance, though not as impressive as 2012′s performance, which featured Madonna and Cirque du Soleil.

But really, out of the three finalists, Perry was the right choice. Let’s face it — Coldplay is boring. Choosing Coldplay would have been like passing out melatonin at rave. A total downer. The symbolism of choosing Rihanna, a domestic violence survivor, given the Ray Rice scandal is way, way too dangerous a situation for the tone-deaf NFL to handle,. That leaves Perry, who, when you really think about it, is relatively scandal-free and uncontroversial. Hell, the most daring thing she’s ever done was sing, “I kissed a girl and I liked it.” So, provided the NFL will pony up and pay the girl, looks like Katy Perry will grace Glendale again.
