“The Victoria’s Secret show is the biggest fashion show in the world, so it will be amazing to bring to London.”
After much speculation, the American based fashion show, Victoria’s Secret, is heading across the pond to London.
One of the largest American retailer of lingerie, every year the internationally popular brand holds a not-so-secret lingerie fashion show with celebrities, designers and glamorous after parties. It has rapidly become one of the most coveted fashion events of the year.
Well known for having stellar performances from notable pop stars, previous Victoria’s Secret fashion shows have seen performances from Rhianna, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
The show is taking a big leap from New York to London.
The world of fashion has been talking non-stop about the big relocation, and Limited Brands Chief Marketing Officer, Edward Razek has even confessed: “The brand has been wanting to show in London since 1998.
“Candidly, in 1998 when we came to London, no one knew who we were. We’ve started opening stores in London — I think we’ve got six stores in Great Britain at the moment and we hope to open more here. We found a good [show] location that made sense in Earls Court. It just kind of all came together this year,” Edward adds.
Victoria’s Secrets American angels, Adriana Lima and Candice Swanepoel made the big announcement at the new Bond Street store along with Razek earlier in April 2014.
Being one of the most-watched catwalk events in the world, London will be privileged to have the show arrive at their doorstep. The show has a normal audience of 1,000 but the move to London has increased the expected audience to 3,000.
It is only fitting that the show relocated to London as the 2013 show was a very British affair. Models donned Union Jack themed attire and waved flags during a ‘British Invasion’ segment, and even American country singer, Taylor Swift got into the swing.
There was blue white and red oozing down the runway, and models donned a ‘Royal Fantasy Bra’ to suit the occasion worth around $10 million.
British models Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn and Lily Donaldson were also on the runway, strutting their stuff for the America crowd. But while they were part of an incredible ensemble for 2013, could we see them return for 2014 in their hometown, London?
Razek did let out a little secret that Cara knew about the show, saying: “I’ll let you in on a secret. I told Cara a week ago that we were coming to do this, and I told her to save the date. She was excited about it.”
Will the British beauty be a part of this year’s show? We will have to wait and see, maybe she will earn her angel wings in her hometown. Brazilian model, Adriana Lima, one of the most famous angels, already has high expectations of the British show.
She declared that there is already a ticket reserved for Prince Harry, should he want one. She also went on to say that he is the ‘UK’s most illegible bachelor’. Adrianna has her eyes set on Harry! Speaking about who she would love to see attend the show, Lima says:
“There are a bunch that we’d like to invite. I’d love to see Elton John because I’m a big fan — I really love him. Hopefully, also — I’d like to invite Prince Harry, if he would like to come. He definitely has a front-row seat!”
So with Prince Harry and Elton John already on the guest list, who else can we expect? It is a known fact that One Direction heartthrob, Harry Styles, never misses a fashion show, but could this be the year that the popular boy band perform exclusively for Victoria’s Secret London?
Ed Razek has said that no performances have been confirmed yet but all the designers are ready. The popular show has already been to Cannes, LA and Miami, but this is a big step for the Victoria Secret crew and all the fans of the brand:
“The Victoria’s Secret show is the biggest fashion show in the world, for sure, so it will be amazing to bring the show to London,” Ed says.
With Victoria’s Secret coming to London, this could open the doors for British Asian models looking to make it big.
One of the first ever Victoria’s Secret models was Canadian-born Yasmeen Ghauri, back in the 1990’s. Gauri is half-German, half-Pakistani and the first Asian model to walk for the lingerie brand.
Her modelling career stirred many in Pakistan and other ethnic countries. For many Asians it was a bit of a grey area, as Victoria’s Secret seemed a taboo topic for them. However, as time and generations have passed, the idea of a sexy lingerie show has become somewhat of the norm, and even a trend.
British Asians no longer have the stigma that the Victoria’s Secret show is bad or showcasing women in a disrespectful way. 23-year-old Anita says: “I adore the Victoria’s Secret show, it’s a buzz in the fashion world, and I watch it and just love all the underwear and the names associated with the show, it’s exciting!”
The show will be held at London’s Earls Court on December 2nd 2014. The Earls Court site is set to be demolished in 2015, so it will certainly be going out with a bang!
