SOUTH LYON, MI – South Lyon police are continuing to investigate a threat made by a student on social media this past weekend.

A 17-year-old male South Lyon High School student allegedly asked a friend if he wanted to re-enact the Feb. 14 school shooting in Florida that killed 17 people, according to a press release from the South Lyon Police Department.

The person who received the message via Snapchat on Friday, Feb. 16, reported the threat to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, who notified the South Lyon Police Department.

On Saturday, officers from the South Lyon Police Department, Oakland County Sheriff’s Department and Green Oak Township Police Department interviewed the suspect and family, who consented to a search of their home and the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect admitted to sending the message about re-enacting the Florida shooting at South Lyon High School, police said.

“No firearms were found in his possession or under his control,” according to the press release from police. “The suspect was subsequently transported to an area hospital for evaluation and is not in police custody.”

South Lyon Community Schools has been on mid-winter break since Feb. 16, and classes are scheduled to resume on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The school district enrolls more than 8,300 students in Oakland County.

A South Lyon police officer will be at South Lyon High School before, during and after school on Wednesday, according to a school safety update sent to families on Tuesday. Additional administrators also will be at the high school to help monitor arrival and dismissal times.

“During the continued investigation, the student will not be allowed at SLHS, any extra-curricular or co-curricular activities, or any of our school buildings,” states the update from the school district.

In response to the Feb. 14 school shooting in Florida, South Lyon Schools Superintendent Melissa Baker issued a statement on Feb. 15 recapping the school district’s safety protocols.

“Each building has crisis teams established who provide feedback and our staff review our protocols annually with our students participating in drills during the school year,” Baker said in her statement. “We are fortunate to have strong relationship with our first responders who support our needs not only in preparing for a crisis, but through their presence on a daily basis in our school settings.”
