South Louisiana lingerie store accepts EBT card for payment – The Times

A Gonzales-based lingerie store now allows its customers to
pay for adult specialty items with their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT)
card.

Kiss My Lingerie, located in the Magnolia Shopping Center on
South Burnside Avenue, recently posted a sign on its front door saying that it accepts
most credit cards, including the EBT card, commonly known as the food
stamps card.

WAFB
reports
that the owner of the store says Kiss My Lingerie started accepting
the EBT card eight months ago, and according to the Department of Children and
Family Services, it’s perfectly legal.

A spokesperson for DCFS says the EBT card, also known as the
Louisiana Purchase card, is not just for food stamps, and that there are also
cash benefits available for other family needs. The Louisiana EBT website says that residents can purchase cleaning products, pet food and paper products with their EBT cards, and that some grocery stores allow residents to get cash back from a transaction. However, cash benefits don’t cover tobacco, alcohol, lottery tickets, casinos and adult
entertainment.

According to the Louisiana EBT website, residents receiving cash benefits can also redeem from ATMs displaying the Quest logo, although they may have to pay a surcharge.

Additionally, Louisiana does not dictate to families how to
spend the money they receive on the cards.

Stores, however, must apply to the federal government to be able to accept EBT cards as a form of payment.

According to DCFS, there are less than 10,000 people who get
the cash benefits, compared with 835,000 who use the EBT card strictly for the
food benefits.

A
woman who works near the store, but asked not to be identified, said over the
last few weeks, the shop has gotten more foot traffic. “It’s
still the taxpayers dollars that are being used in a store like that and that
really upsets me,” the unidentified woman said, adding, “No child I
know eats edible underwear.”
