BOSOM BUDDIES: Sophie Theallet was catching up with Lane Bryant’s chief executive officer Lisa Heasley near the lingerie racks at the company’s Midtown flagship on Tuesday night. An event celebrating the launch of Theallet’s holiday lingerie collection for the retailer was underway, with models traipsing through the space in black-and-nude silk nightgowns.
“The collection is inspired by a Fabergé egg,” said Theallet. “As you can see, there is no more padding. Because Cacique [the retailer’s own line of intimates] is known to keep everything in place — the [fabrics] have special engineering to embrace the curve and the beauty of the woman — I took out the padding to make it more soft and more modern. And [the panties] are trompe-l’œil; she’s looking like she has a G-string on, but she doesn’t.”
In other words, “It’s very French,” Theallet added.
The designer’s heritage was indeed emphasized, with quotes such as “Originale, sensuelle, suggestif” and “C’est magnifique!” written across the lookbook, featuring model Marquita Pring. French touches were also seen in bows, corsetry and other cheeky accessories, such as garter belts and lace eye masks.
Though it was her first venture into the innerwear market, Theallet said the design process felt like a continuation of her ready-to-wear. “I want this woman to feel really beautiful. Everything is super well-done, [in terms of] details; I made very careful that it’s exquisite.”
Heasley said she was drawn to Theallet’s “feminine, sexy and fun” designs, noting the collection has been selling well since it hit floors on Dec. 7.Prices range from $14.95 for thigh-high stockings to $118 for the bias-cut satin, lace and sheer mesh nightgown.
In coming months, a Valentine’s Day-themed lingerie collection and a swimwear line, both for Cacique, will hit the sales floor.
“It’s important to commit totally when I’m doing collaborations, and especially this one,” Theallet said. “It’s something very important for me, because I’m not a size zero myself.”
