Shanina Shaik defends Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner as Victoria’s Secret models

They’ve been dubbed as the new generation of supermodels after strutting the Victoria’s Secret catwalk last year.

And while many have accused Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner of not ‘earning’ their spots in the coveted fashion show held last November, fellow model Shanina Shaik begs to differ.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the 24-year-old said Gigi and Kendall, both 20, have worked ‘really hard’ to get where they are in spite of their famous family connections.

‘I know them personally,’ she went on, adding: ‘Attachment sometimes from the outside in can help but they do work really hard.

‘They also have dreams and goals they want to achieve and they’re very humble and they’re very appreciative of everything great that happens to them. I see that myself,’ she continued.

Gigi, the daughter of The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster, was one of the most talked about additions to the Victoria’s Secret runway show last year.

While the ex-girlfriend of Australian rocker Cody Simpson had appeared in Victoria’s Secret Pink, the model failed to get cast in the 2013 lingerie show, and Shanina says Gigi’s perseverance must be noted.

Spreading her wings: Gigi, the daughter of The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster, made the Victoria’s Secret cut after previously being rejected twice

‘Gigi’s been modelling since she was a young kid and I think people forget that,’ Shanina told Daily Mail Australia adding: ‘Gigi had to try out a few times before she got in.’

She went on: ‘And Kendall, she’s been saying she wants to model for a while,’ reflecting on the famous member of the Kardashian clan who made her Victoria’s Secret catwalk debut last year.

‘They did an amazing job and they looked great and they did amazing for the show. They have amazing bodies and they fit the criteria for Victoria’s Secret.’

Shanina made her own Victoria’s Secret runway show debut in 2011.

Since then she has strut the catwalk for the luxurious lingerie label in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

‘Seeing them being new to Victoria’s Secret, I saw myself four years ago,’ Shanina reflected, revealing she took the liberty to give both Gigi and Kendall some valuable advice for their big career move.

‘I had like Adriana (Lima) and Miranda (Kerr) giving me advice at that time so I just said “You know what, enjoy the moment”,’ she said.

‘There’s two shows that they tape. I was like “Do what you want, enjoy the moment, have fun with it because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it’s a beautiful memory to me so you’ve just got to enjoy it, celebrate and be yourself”.’

Shanina, who was Down Under last week to attend a Bondi Sands Sydney Harbour Cruise, recently returned to the Victoria’s Secret set after announcing her engagement to DJ Ruckus (Gregory Andrews) earlier this month.

‘It was my first job of the year after all that good holiday food,’ the brunette beauty giggled.

Shedding some light on her fitness regime, she revealed: ‘I’m very consistent with my workout even throughout holidays. I practise a lot of yoga.’
