A police detective was fatally shot and another officer wounded after a suspected gunman opened fire in rural Georgia.
Seth Brandon Spangler was wanted for a probation violation before Polk County officer Kristin Hearne was shot and killed on Friday morning, according to Sheriff Kenny Dodd.
A second officer, David Goodrich, was shot but saved from serious injury by his bulletproof vest.
The pair were investigating reports of a stolen car Friday morning when they encountered Spangler and Samantha Roof, 22, at the edge of a woody area near Cedartown, close to the Alabama border.

The George Bureau of Investigation, looking into the shooting, said that Spangler, 31, pulled out a pistol and killed Hearne.
Roof was arrested shortly afterwards, with the gunman later surrendering without clothes on, according to Dodd.
Hearne was a 29-year-old detective who had been with her department five years.
She leaves behind a husband and a 3-year-old daughter.
