DUNCAN, Okla. — A 15-year-old girl was found safe after a terrifying ordeal involving online dating, a police standoff, and a suicide.
We’re told the girl was picked up from her Duncan home by a 46-year-old man she met online. Investigators tell us the girl was listed as a 17-year-old on the dating website.
The girl’s family says they knew she had an online boyfriend, but they didn’t know much about him. Her dad reported her missing Friday morning.
Saturday night, just one day after the girl vanished from her home near downtown Duncan, police say Walter Morris was holed up in a motel room outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They say he had a 15-year-old Duncan girl and a gun with him.
Police Chief Danny Ford says the two met though a dating website.
“Early on, we had no reason to believe she’d left the Duncan area,” Chief Ford said.
But everything changed when they started tracing the girl’s cell phone and opened a package addressed to her from Morris.
It was lingerie.
“We were already very interested and worried about the situation, but I got a phone call from the investigator as soon as he got that and he said, ‘this is not good,’” Ford said.
Phone records show the teen had been in contact with someone in Pennsylvania. Police called the number. It was Morris.
At first, he denied being involved.
“He finally said, ‘yeah I did have her with me, I did pick her up, but when we stopped in Ohio she got out and took off.’ ‘She disappeared’ were his words,” Ford said.
But investigators didn’t buy it.
Police got a tip Morris was at a motel holding a teenage girl against her will. The local bomb squad and SWAT teams tried for hours Saturday night to get Morris to surrender. Nearly six hours later, the standoff ended when Morris took his own life.
“There was always a fear for her life because sometimes we deal with these situations, and it can also be a murder suicide in that room, we don’t know. That’s why we take our time with negotiating,” Allegheny County Police Superintendent Jim Morton said.
Thankfully the girl wasn’t hurt.
Authorities in Pennsylvania were familiar with Morris. He was a bounty hunter there and did time in jail for assault.
The FBI is still investigating.
