Pennsylvania school district gives teachers small baseball bats

Teachers at a school district in Erie, Pa., recently were given souvenir-style baseball bats to keep in their classrooms, reports say.
ERIE, Pennsylvania — A school district has given souvenir-style baseball bats to its teachers in what it is describing as a ‘last resort’ measure in defense against a gunman, reports say.
Millcreek School District Superintendent William Hall tells goerie.com that teachers are not expected to confront a gunman with the 16-inch bat. Instead, the district hopes the bats remind teachers to fight back if necessary.
“The bats are more symbolic than anything,” Hall says. “However, we do want to have one consistent tool to have at somebody’s disposal in a classroom in the event they have to fight.”
Hall tells erienewsnow.com that a bat was given to each of the district’s 500 teachers after an in-service training day.
“We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these,” Hall says. “Unfortunately, we’re in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids.”
The bats will be locked up in each classroom, reports say.
Jon Cacchione, president of the Millcreek Education Association, tells erienewsnow.com he supports the district’s effort.
“It’s to make people comfortable with the idea that they can attack and not simply go into hard lockdown and just hide, as we’d been told in our training up to this point,” Cacchione tells goerie.com.
Reports say the school district is taking other security measures and is to determine if there is support for arming some staff members with firearms. Currently it is not legal in Pennsylvania to arm school officials.
