Fifty Shades of Grey equals gold in the bank for savvy merchandisers

Fifty Shades of Grey equals gold in the bank for savvy merchandisers

The Fifty Shades effect has seen a boom
in sales of everything from lingerie to neckties and hair dye since being released in May 2011, so it is only fair that the original brand gets a slice of the multi-million pound ‘mummy porn’ pie.

Rumours of an official merchandising deal for a ‘Fifty Shades’ brand surfaced months ago, and this week hot on the heels of the announcement of a classical compilation album an American licensing firm confirmed to gossip site TMZ that Fifty Shades-themed lingerie, sleepwear and clothing will be coming to a store near you very soon.

Three separate companies have confirmed licensing deals with author E.L James to sell the first-ever official Fifty Shades branded apparel line: A company called HYP will be selling hosiery, garters, and tights; FREEZE Clothing will be selling the knits, tees, and hoodies and Briefly Stated will sell daywear, loungewear, sleepwear and underwear.

James – who earns almost £1million a week from the erotic books – signed a deal with independent agency Caroline Mickler earlier this summer, giving Mickler the responsibility for for building the brand worldwide.

Mickler told fashion blog fashionista.com: ‘The market’s interest in Fifty Shades of Grey as a brand is enormous.

‘With continuing book sales and a film version keeping awareness high, we expect this property to make a very strong showing in a number of licensed categories over the coming months.’

A Facebook poll today put Batman star Christan Bale as favourite to play billionaire Christian Grey in the movie of the book ahead of Robert Pattinson and Magic Mike star Matt Bomer who has been the favourite for the role since Universal Pictures acquired the rights.

seriously, are people that obsessed with this book?! It’s a naughty (poorly written) book, get over it! there is plenty of that sort of thing on the internet if you really want it. Otherwise get on with making your real sex life more interesting.

Will John Major be in the film!

This book is boring and very predictable. The main character just sounds like a sleaze ball. I couldn’t get into it. It for sad old housewives that need spicing up

Ian Somerhalder should have that role. He is perfect for it.

“Fifty Shades of Grey has seen a boom in everything”—————————– Well, yesterday, I went to Pizza Hut. Are you telling me Pizza Hut have seen a boom in customers because of this drivel??????????

*sigh* so sick of this 50 Shades Of Boring Grey!

Think I’ll stick with Anais Nin – thanks very much!

I’ve read the books and really enjoyed them. I didn’t ‘get off’ on the sex scenes or read the books for that specific purpose – I just wanted a bit of escapism; the same as a lot of readers. I find a lot of the criticism unnecessary and suspect it is mostly (not exclusively) from pretentious types that are so stuck up their own backsides (ahem) that they are incapable of enjoying a book or film just for the sake of enjoying a book or film. In addition, to label the readers as ‘trash’ is just plain nasty and offensive. Yes, I think the merch-monster is rearing it’s all-too-frequent head, but heyho – that’s the world we live in.

Matt Bomer looks good, but I agree Ian Somerhalder would be perfect for the role of Christian!

I think Ian Solemander form Vampire diaries would make an excellent Christian Grey,he has the eyes that smoulder, the body to die for and is the right age, have read all three books twice! and am taking them on holiday, cant wait for the film!!!! and merchandise when it hits the shops xxx
