Netflix has revealed that the online movie rental service will not be integrated with the social networking website Facebook across the United States of America.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the online movie rental service provider, Netflix in a letter to its shareholders announced that it is integrating the service with leading social networking website Facebook. However, the service via Facebook will be offered only in Canada and South America and not in the USA.

“Netflix says it will have a cool integration with Facebook up and running sometime in the next three months, but only for subscribers in Canada and Latin America (where it has yet to officially open for business).” the letter read.

The chief executive officer of Netflix, Reed Hastings has revealed that the US launch will not happen due to concerns over an American privacy legislation which could stop them from the integration. Hastings blamed the government for this glitch citing that he never heard of the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) before.

The act which came into effect in 1988 prohibits revelation of information regarding video rental details of a user in the US. Under this law, companies found violating may be charged $2,500 for every disclosure.
