My Book Face Plus Twitter Space What?

Social networks have been around for a long time, but they have become much more complex because everything is on the Internet and information superhighway. Everybody wants to be social and keep up with other people. Social networking in the old days was going down to the local Tavern or a church function on Wednesday evening…not checking Facebook on your phone every 20 minutes. There is a new big player in the social networking service game, Google with the new Google+ (plus). That raises a lot of questions about the future in the social networking space and will Facebook remain king.

(A modern online “Social Network” is a service that connects people…allowing users to share ideas, activities, events, photos, and interests within their individual chosen groups.)

Lots of people know Facebook, but have forgotten or never heard of MySpace. Most folks don’t remember, AOL chat, IRC chat, or the bulletin board days. We have certainly progressed to the point where most people don’t even use email to communicate or “follow” friends and family…people just

use Facebook. With 750 million active users, “The FB” is the hands down heavy weight champ of the every changing social network wars. I’m not really mentioning Twitter here because as popular as it may be, it’s just doesn’t give you the ability to see little Johnnie’s soccer pictures from Saturday the way Facebook does. Everyone from Grandma to Uncle Fred can view the soccer pictures on their computer, phone, iPad, or even their TV almost in real time.

Now we have Google+, the new kid on the block. What makes it different? It’s hard to get excited about a new social network when some many have come and gone the past few years…You know the Facebook killers like Verb, Pounce, or Namesake. Never heard of them? That’s because they didn’t quite cut the mustard (although Namesake is still going). Will Google+ survive? In my opinion yes it will. The reason I say this is simple, it’s Google. Google is a major player in technology, and they have billions in the bank…yes billions with a capital B.

Google+ is a social network just like Facebook. It has many of the same features as “The FB” and a few unique things also. Circles, Huddles, and Hangouts are among these. I won’t bore you with explanations of each. I will save that for a future blog once Google+ goes full public. Being a photo dude, I also like the way Google+ handles pictures. Plus there are business specific tools coming that will make it attractive to business owners (both on a local and national level)

So Google+ is still invite only and has not been launched for full public use yet. (You have to be invited by a user to join…hint: I have invites if you are curious) When it does launch to the public, we will see how much steam (Google money) is put behind it.

Interesting side note: Number of days it took each of the following social networks to reach 10 million users. Facebook 812 days – Twitter 780 days – Google+ 16 days
