Mayim Bialik: Why Does Ariana Grande "Have to Sell Herself in Lingerie?"

However, she writes:
“I don’t want my kids learning about sex from billboards. Stuff like that. Which is why a few billboards I have seen lately really bug me. There is one for Ariana Grande, and I will go ahead and admit I have no idea who she is or what she does. Based on the billboard, she sells lingerie. Or stiletto heels. Or plastic surgery because every woman over 22 wishes she has that body, I’m sure. Why is she in her underwear on this billboard though? And if she has a talent (is she a singer?), then why does she have to sell herself in lingerie? I mean, I know that society is patriarchal and women are expected to be sexy and sexually available no matter what we do in society, but I guess now I need to explain that to my sons?”
She also wonders how she’s supposed to explain the Masters of Sex ads to her kids, especially her older son, who can read. (Mayim and her ex-husband Michael Stone have two sons: Miles was born in 2005 and Fred was born in 2008).
Read her full blog post here. Reaction has been mixed, so far. Many readers seem to agree with the former Blossom star — sharing her frustration with oversexualized images of young women in advertisements. Why are pop stars (who are incredibly influential on their preteen/teen fans) still being sold as sex objects in giant billboards in 2014? Is that really a message we want to pass on to another generation? But some fans slammed the double standard of shaming women for showing their bodies. Why should Ariana, or any adult, have to cover up to make you feel better? It is a parent’s job to explain sexuality to their kids, and if you don’t want to see giant billboards using sex to sell music/movies/TV, maybe L.A. isn’t the best place to live.
Others sniffed that Mayim sounds jealous of Ariana, or said she was rude to write about her in such a dismissive way (chances are she does know that Ariana is a singer). And still other fans just say Mayim is one to question anyone since she breastfed her son until he was 4, among other unusual things.
Where do you stand on this? Do you applaud Mayim or disagree with her?
