— A 37-year-old Fall River man faces a misdemeanor charge following an obscene phone call he allegedly made to a Barrington woman.

According to Barrington Police, Derek R. Chaves called a 21-year-old Barrington woman on Sept. 29 and told her that he was working on behalf of Victoria’s Secret and that she had won free lingerie.

Mr. Chaves reportedly started asking the woman questions — he told he that in order to collect the prize she needed to answer a survey. The local woman grew suspect very quickly, however, when the nature of the questions shifted from her clothing size to queries of a sexual nature.

Police said the woman asked for the man’s name, which prompted him to hang up. She then called police and shared the information with officers. Police tracked the call to a Fall River business and eventually to Mr. Chaves.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said the suspect initially denied the allegations, but eventually admitted to making the call.

“He said he picks random numbers to call. He said it was a stress release for him,” said Chief LaCross.

Mr. Chaves reportedly turned himself into authorities on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
