A fashion design student is off to America to work for one of the world’s top fashion companies.

Hannah Thomas, 22, who is studying contour fashion at De Montfort University, will take up her role with Abercrombie Fitch after graduating next month.

She said: “I’m really excited and it still hasn’t sunk in.

“Having a job lined up was a big weight off my mind – and working for a company as prestigious as Abercrombie Fitch is a dream come true.”

The two-year contract will see Hannah working at the head office of the firm in Ohio, designing new lines.

Hannah impressed Abercrombie Fitch bosses with her designs after taking part in a project with the company during her course at the university.

The challenge was to design a collection for the upmarket chain’s lingerie label, aimed at young women.

To land the job, Hannah, who is originally from Wales, had to go through a rigorous round of interviews, including some in America.

She said: “I was interviewed in the UK and was then flown to the States, where I had three more interviews.

“The whole experience was amazing – and they looked after me so well.

“I’m hopefully going to be there for more than just the first two years. I’m really excited about being in a new city and the money – about £30,000 – is much more than I could hope for starting in London.”

Hannah, who starts in October, is the latest in a number of students from De Montfort who have been recruited by the company over the past six years.

Sarah Brennand, recruitment manager for Abercrombie Fitch in the UK, said: “De Montfort University consistently produces excellent-calibre graduates, with a specialised skill set that makes them very appealing to our business.

“The students graduate with a technical know-how and an understanding of underwear that means they’re extremely employable. We’re delighted that, once again, we’re able to offer a job to a De Montfort graduate and we looking forward to welcoming Hannah to our headquarters in the US in October.”

Gillian Proctor, head of the university’s contour fashion degree, said: “We pride ourselves on producing graduates who can demonstrate their creativity and innovation – which is why Abercrombie Fitch is such a keen supporter of our course.

“Hannah is a lively, personable and articulate young woman who I think will fit in perfectly with the team in Ohio.

“She’s worked really hard for this and I’m sure she’ll do well.”

Hannah’s lingerie collection was showcased at the university’s contour fashion show in London on Thursday last week.

“Having a great job to go to in October meant that I could relax and enjoy the contour catwalk show,” she said.

“It’s been hard work, but it’s all paid off.”
