PLANTATION, Fla. (AP) – A Broward County judge is set to decide next month whether to allow a medical guardian to intervene in a fight between parents over whether a terminally-ill seven-month old should be put into hospice care.

The Miami Herald reports that Circuit Judge Kenneth Gillespie on Friday ordered that the guardian be appointed and allowed speak with the baby’s doctors and make recommendations at a Feb. 19 hearing. The Herald is not fully identifying the infant to protect his privacy. “Baby Ricardo” was born premature in August, and was badly deprived of oxygen, leading to severe brain damage. He is now in a vegetative state.

At doctors’ urging, the child’s father has signed a “Do Not Resuscitate” order, while the mother is refusing to do so.
