Is there extra reason to remember the fifth of November this year? A hacker group known as Anonymous has announced via YouTube video that they plan to “destroy” Facebook on Nov. 5, accusing the social networking giant of abusing user’s privacy.

According to Time, the video alleges that Facebook helps governments spy on people internationally, and claims “everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook, and deleting your account is impossible.” It continues, “If you do delete your account your personal info still stays on Facebook and can always be recovered.”

The video was uploaded to a newly created “FacebookOp” account on July 16, but just began circulating among the media this week. The video narrator says: “Your medium of communication you all so dearly adore will be destroyed. If you want to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy.”

The date Anonymous has chosen for their destruction activity happens to be Guy Fawkes Day. According to the Christian Science Monitor, in 1605, British revolutionary Guy Fawkes had the idea to blow up the British Parliament, to restore Catholicism as the nation’s religion. Fawkes was found on Nov. 5 with explosives in the basement of the House of Lords in London, just moments away from lighting the match.

CNN reports that in December, Anonymous tried and failed to take down retailer Amazon. And in recent years, Anonymous has taken credit for hacking the websites of PayPal, Master Card, Visa and the Church of Scientology.

On Monday, Anonymous took credit for hacking the website of the Syrian Defense Ministry, putting in an anti-government message and the Anonymous logo. PC World reports Anonymous and affiliated group Lulz Security have targeted the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, PBS.org, Fox.com and the U.K.’s Serious Organized Crime Agency for attacks in recent months.
