Guitarist says McCartney hit ‘crazy’ high notes on ‘Kansas City’ at K.C. show

Paul McCartney played a concert at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., on July 16. And it should be no surprise that the crowd wanted very badly to hear “Kansas City,” a song done by the Beatles and sung by McCartney, guitarist Brian Ray told Beatles Examiner. “I think we saw signs that they’d pay $100 if he’d just sing that song,” Ray said in a phone interview.”

McCartney did the song in the first encore. Ray says that that from a singing standpoint he did an amazing job. “He killed the vocal singing B-flats and C’s in full voice. Those are notes in the scale that happen to very high for a man,” he explained. “With B-flats and C’s, I’m talking about screaming like a demon in full voice with control. It’s kind of crazy.”
Brenda Spencer, who attended, said the show was great. “K.C. was the best so far!,” she said. “He was so happy, animated and feeding off the audience. A woman threw a pair of panties on stage. He looked at it, bent over and picked them up and said, ‘Is this like a Tom Jones show now?’”
“He claimed it was the first time ever for that to happen to him,” said Jennie Swenton, who also attended. “He later made a show of handing the item to one of the road crew.”
Swenton said McCartney was joking with the crowd. “Being in Kansas City, he said, ‘Go Chiefs!,’ which was met with first cheers, then boos. He said he had checked to see. ‘It’s just the Chiefs, right?” He seemed surprised that the audience wasn’t all Chiefs fans.
“He also said we’re in Kansas City, Missouri, right? Paused, pointed and said, ‘And that’s Kansas City, Kansas over there, right?” He asked how many were from Missouri and there was a big cheer. Then he asked how many were from Kansas and there was a bigger cheer.
“Knew it was going to be special when my wife and I were able to see him arrive at the Sprint Center,” said Terry McCulley. “It was an excellent show. His voice was in great shape. Paul and band brought the house down. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
“I thought the show was tremendous,” said Darrell Lea. “The band played everything superbly, and the connection between performer and artist was solid all night long. Paul set foot on stage at 8:40 and walked off for the last time at 11:25. I saw his show in ’76, ’90, ’93 and last night. This most recent one just might be my favorite.”
Ray says the resumption of the tour with McCartney has gone superbly. “As reflected in the reviews of our latest shows, Paul’s been in fine fettle, in top form as if he’s 28 years old. And we’re all happy for it.”
The Kansas City show was the last show for a few weeks. The tour resumes Aug. 2 at Target Field in Minneapolis.
