Erskine Bowles, the former president of the University of North Carolina system and a native of Greensboro, is the newest heavy hitter to join the board of directors of Facebook

, according to an announcement from the social networking giant.

Bowles may have sat in more seats of power over the years than anyone else from the Triad, from that of the chief of staff of President Clinton to the recent high-profile (if little listened-to) Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission among others. Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he was attracted to the broad range of Bowles’ resume.

“Erskine has held important roles in government, academia and business which have given him insight into how to build organizations and navigate complex issues,” Zuckerberg said. “Along with his experience founding companies, this will be very valuable as we continue building new things to help make the world more open and connected.”

Facebook currently touts more than 750 million users, and Bowles’ fellow Facebook directors are also pretty well-connected. They include Donald Graham of the Washington Post

. Co., Netflix

CEO Reed Hastings and venture capitalists Marc Andreessen, Jim Breyer and Peter Thiel.

For his part, Bowles said he is looking forward to helping build Facebook any way he can.

“Facebook has clearly emerged as a transformative force in the world,” Bowles said.
