Five Things To Know About Cupertino Patch

In conversations I’ve had with those of you in Cupertino over the past seven months since Cupertino Patch launched I’ve come away with three key questions that lead to this article:

What does Cupertino want from Patch? What can you readers do to support us so that we can continue to provide you with great coverage of Cupertino? What can Patch do for you?

So here goes…

What does Cupertino want from Patch?

Someone from Cupertino who provides news tips and other media information recently asked me what kind of information I wanted to get from them—I turned the question around and asked, what do YOU want to get from Cupertino Patch? I’d like all of you readers to answer that same question. Are we providing the types of articles you want to read? If so, tell us! We love to hear from you. If not, tell us what you want to read and see on Patch.

What can you readers do to support us so that we can continue to provide you with great coverage of Cupertino?

A few community members asked me that question last week and I said, “Tell all your friends about us, ‘like’ us on Facebook, and ‘follow’ us on Twitter for starters.”

What can Patch do for you?

We’ve built Patch so you have plenty of opportunities to comment on stories, share your opinions, post photos and announcements and add events to the community calendar—all for free. We hope our site will strengthen the community, but we can’t do it without you.

Here are five things you should know about Patch. We’ll tell you five more great things about Patch later this week, so stay tuned!

1. Comment on an Article

We subscribe to the idea that “news is a conversation.” Much of our reporting emanates from what readers tell us in emails, comments on our sites, Facebook and Twitter, and in conversations around town. Share your thoughts and reactions to our articles by posting a comment directly below each story.

2. Ask a Question

So maybe you want to know the latest news about Lehigh Cement, or maybe you heard a new coffee and dessert bar just opened and want to know what others think about it. Patch’s QA section is the place for you to ask your questions and show off your expertise, all while connecting with your neighbors. Visit cupertino.patch.com/questions and ask a question, or answer someone else’s.

3. Post an Event

Do you know of a nonprofit fundraising event that needs volunteers, or a music performance being held in Cupertino? Is there a garage sale or club event coming up? Does your school or sports team have a fundraiser coming up? If it’s not on our Patch calendar, it should be. Feel free to add events to our site at cupertino.patch.com/events/new

4. Send a News Tip

At the bottom of the homepage, there’s a link that says, “Send Us News Tips.” Tell us about stories we should cover. Your tip will be sent straight to me, Anne Ward Ernst, Cupertino Patch’s (incredibly grateful) editor.

5. Post an Announcement

Post births, engagements and wedding announcements. Tell us who made the honor roll, or share school awards, social notes and shout-outs of thanks. If you’re looking for volunteers or searching for your lost dog, we welcome you to call on your community for help. Just remember that our Terms of Service say announcements should be for personal use and not for advertising.

(A shout out to Phil Lenihan and Bill Mannion for suggesting this, and a shout out to my colleague, Mayra Flores de Marcotte, for writing most of this article.)
