Facebook Streamlines UI of Developer Console

Facebook has revamped the interface of the console that its external developers use to manage their applications for the social networking site.

With the new layout, the basic application management functions have been grouped in one section, consolidating settings and data that were previously in different places of this control panel, which Facebook officials call Developer App.

“The settings listed on this page are the set of fields needed for you to quickly get started building a simple ‘Hello World’ app on Facebook Platform,” Facebook official Alan McConnell said in a blog post.

This section contains an application’s basic information, such as name, icon and unique ID number, as well as a menu for selecting and configuring the type of Facebook integration the application will have.

More sophisticated settings for things like authentication, migrations and security, are on a separated section labeled Advanced.

With the introduction of its developer platform in 2007, Facebook shook up the social networking market. By letting external developers build applications for its site, Facebook boosted its popularity as users added games and other tools to complement their social networking experience.

Now that Google is making a full-fledged effort to compete against Facebook with its Google+ social network, it’s even more critical for Facebook to protect its relationship with application developers.

Google still hasn’t launched a developer platform for Google+, but it has indicated it plans to do so, and last week introduced an initial set of games created by hand-selected external developers that got early access to the site’s API (application programming interface).
