New York, Aug 31 (ANI): Former Lingerie Football player Krista Ford is under fire for comments suggesting sexual assault victims bring crime on themselves with their provocative dressing.
According to the Toronto Star, Ford, niece of Toronto mayor Rob Ford, took to the microblogging site Wednesday evening to offer the controversial advice just an hour after authorities held a news conference about a string of sexual assaults in Canada’s largest city, the New York Daily News reported.
“Stay alert, walk tall, carry mace, take self-defence classes and don’t dress like a whore,” she tweeted, adding “#DontBeAVictim #StreetSmart.”
The tweet was later deleted.
Several Twitter users expressed outrage over Ford’s tweet and many called her out for promoting the use of mace, which is considered an illegal weapon in Toronto.
“Wait, did @kristaford just make a ridiculously sexist comment AND encourage people to carry prohibited weapons?” one user tweeted.
“just curious, mace is a prohibited weapon and why are a women’s clothes to blame for a sexual assault,” another wrote.
SlutWalk Toronto responded to Ford’s advice on Twitter Thursday.
“(Krista Ford’s) tweet was victim-blaming and misguided,” the group tweeted. “That said, harassing, slut-shaming, name-calling, threatening her is not helpful.” (ANI)
