According to Google, the most searched-for items over the past year aren’t Gucci loafers or a pleated, metallic skirt, but a onesie – of the adult variety. Just when you hoped that onesie fever had peaked last Christmas, Google has got solid proof that demand is as fervent as ever. The search engine reports that in the US, the onesie is trailed by search interest for Adidas Superstar trainers, Levi’s jeans and Shinola watches.
I’ll admit that I own and yes, occasionally wear, a (plain) onesie. It was a 2014 Christmas gift which proved a godsend for getting through a winter in flat that had gaps in the windows as wide as my fingers. Here’s how to wear yours without looking like a sloth…
Go plain
Opt for block colours with only the minutest of details, such as contrasting waist ties, zips of cuffs. If in doubt, you can’t go wrong with a sensible colour such as grey or navy. Think knitted as opposed to cheap fleecy fabric when it comes to composition.
They are for indoor consumption only
Think of your all-in-one as a draught-free dressing gown for cold nights and sick days. It isn’t a substitute for leggings or jumpers, so resist the temptation to wear it out.
Keep them slim in the leg
To avoid looking an extra from a pantomime, take pride in the silhouette of your onesie by choosing one that is form-fitting as opposed to comedically baggy.
Limit your tea consumption
As snug as all-in-ones make us feel, there’s not the most gracious things to get out of when popping to the loo. Avoid repeat cups of tea to ensure trips to the water closet are kept to a minimum.
Invest in luxury
If you can afford to splash out on a cashmere style, you certainly won’t regret it. The fabric is the finest and feels most soft against skin – and so warm that you might be able to offset a reduced need for central heating against your investment. Look for washable cashmere blends, otherwise your dry-cleaner will get to know you on a first-name basis.
Do wear something underneath
As in, if your onesie is very form fitting, keep your lingerie on. If you have room more room for manoeuvre, get even cosier with a T-shirt or camisole underneath.
