CHEK to broadcast lingerie football

There’s no team at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre – the obvious name would be the Victoria Secrets – but that’s not stopping CHEK-TV from taking a chance on the Lingerie Football League’s Abbotsford-based B.C. Angels franchise.

The Island-based station will carry nine LFL games, on tape delay, each Saturday night at 8: 30 p.m. beginning Sept. 1.

“It was an opportunity for us,” said John Pollard, president of CHEK.

BusinessWeek called the LFL the fastest growing sports league in the U.S. and a rare women’s pro sports league that is actually growing.

“It’s basically arena football with college athletes,” noted Pollard.

In pads, helmets and under-things.

But who knows? It could be just the ticket for the 2016 Summer Games – which, after all, are in Rio.

“It does well in U.S. markets against other athletic entertainment programming such as UFC and WWE,” said Pollard.

“We’ve signed on for the season and we’ll see how it goes.”

The other teams in LFL Canada are, the Regina Rage, Saskatoon Sirens and Toronto Triumph.

The season kicks off Aug. 25 with the Rage visiting the Angels in Abbotsford.

Dave Dakers, president of sports and entertainment for RG Properties, which operates the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, confirmed recently the LFL had approached RG about operating a team in Victoria but that RG passed.

CHEK, though, has taken the ball and is running with it.
