SUPERMODEL Heidi Klum is used to flaunting her assets as one of the world’s most photographed bikini bodies.

But off camera, she’s prefers to keep her private life to herself.

After the breakup of her seven-year marriage to singer Seal, the 42-year-old is rarely snapped with her current boyfriend, New York art dealer Vito Schnabel, 29, choosing only to post discreet photos of him on her Instagram (she has 2.4 million followers).

“I feel like you have to have a certain privacy still,” Klum told News Corp Australia.

“Sometimes I give a glimpse of my private life, or my boyfriend, but I feel like there has to be a limit to it because I don’t want to share everything, either.

“I don’t really post my family (on social media). I don’t show the faces of my children, I chose not to do that — ever.”

The German supermodel’s catwalk career included being a Victoria’s Secret Angel and Sports Illustrated cover star, before she moved to TV (including as host of America’s Project Runway) and designing lingerie (he label is Heidi Klum Intimates) and soon, swimwear.

Speaking at Myer Melbourne’s Mural Hall, Klum confesses to having “hundreds” of bras and never throws them out.

“I mean everyone who goes into my closet is kind of overwhelmed a bit,” Klum said.

“I’m a harder and I reuse all my pieces. It’s not like I wear something one time and then it goes.”

She always wears matching bra and knickers (“I like that”). “And a tip of mine would be to get three bottoms to one bra, so you can wear the bra a few days and always have the matching panties to go with it,” she says.

“I feel like they always kind of get lost too, like socks.”

Her go-to item to feel sexy in lingerie?

“When I go out to dinner, I wear garter belts and I wear stockings … under a short little dress and then when you sit down, you see it on the side a little bit, just a little bit,” Klum says.

“I don’t think you should get anything that will only live in your drawer and never see the light of day.

“You have to feel confident enough to pull it out and wear it otherwise what’s the point? When you sit and cross your legs, you see just a little bit.”

She is a hands on designer, discussing in detail the pros of a “half underwire” bra cup.

“I love to actually see more skin than bra. I try to always cut the bra back … that you see more boob and less bra.

“Before they (bras) were kind of more covered … so you’d only have a little bit on top, or maybe if you had the balcony shape, you’d maybe have more cleavage.

“By cutting it open, and then you have like a half underwire in here — did you feel this one?,” Klum says, grabbing a red bra from her latest collection to show me.

“It only has a half underwire and when you have a wider band underneath it … it pushes more from the side.

“Every bra has a different construction which gives you different shaped cleavage.”

Heidi Klum Intimates are available nationally, including at Myer.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the Queen of Burlesque offers some advice on selecting the perfect lingerie for your lady

What’s the biggest mistake men make when buying lingerie for the lady in their life?
Buying lingerie that is totally out of character for her, or buying cheap “sexy” lingerie. Quality is very important when it comes to giving lingerie as a gift.

How important is it to know her exact measurements?
Very! It’s not hard to find out… just go into her lingerie drawers and look for tags and take snapshots of the tags. Taking photos of things can also help a salesperson choose style that she would love.

Thong or brief?
Both! I believe in creating a versatile lingerie wardrobe, with varying shapes. Always buy at least two pairs of underwear for each bra. This also prolongs the life of the set.

Does too much padding send her the wrong message?
Always look to see what she prefers and buys for herself. If she likes push-up bras, buy those. If she likes thin, wispy lace bras, buy those!

Are any particular styles in your line best-sellers and perhaps fail-safe for a man that’s a little stuck on where to start?
Black lace lingerie is elegant, timeless and classic. My Star Lift or Sheer Witchery ranges are functional and beautiful.

What would you say to any men that are perhaps a little embarrassed about entering a lingerie store?
Department stores with personal shoppers and knowledgeable lingerie expert salespeople are a great place to go. Take in something that shows your lady’s preferred shapes, like a snapshot or two of pieces found in her drawer. It also helps for a salesperson to know her fashion style too, so have a few photos of her ready that you might like to show the salesperson.

Are there any colours you’d advise men to steer clear of?
I’d probably stick to classic, beautiful lace in ivory, black, navy and skip neon colours. I’d look and see what she has in her drawers already… if you see vibrant colours like red and coral, go for it!

Do you have any final words of encouragement for choosing a set she’ll love?
Always let her know that you are happy for her to exchange things for a better size or alternative colour, and make the return outing fun!
