Francis Ryan, a 69-year-old retiree who lives in Naples, told BuzzFeed News that he was waiting out Irma in his condo.
Ryan said that he’s one of the few people left in his complex.
“If it’s going to hit, it’s going to hit here,” he said of Irma’s western turn.
Ryan said that it’s too late now to evacuate, and that if he wanted to he should have done it “a week ago.”
“Right now, there’s barely any gas in this part of Florida,” he said. “You know — Florida’s a big state.”
Another Naples resident, Vanessa Medina, expressed frustrations to BuzzFeed News over her parents’ decision for their family to stay in the area during the storm.
Medina said she was already nervous at the early news of Hurricane Irma being a Category 5 storm before reports said the storm was now headed in her direction.
To prepare, her family has put up plywood and shutters as well as sandbags on their garage door in case of flooding. Their house is 6 or 7 feet above sea level, she said, but still Medina is very worried about the rest of her neighborhood.
While most of her friends have fled Naples, her house currently is holding 27 people through the storm, she said.
Bill Fassold, a spokesperson for Collier County, which includes Naples, told BuzzFeed News Saturday evening that shelters were packed.
“Most of the shelters are at capacity, if not all of them,” he said around 5 p.m. ET.
Fassold said that around 25 shelters were filled with over 15,000 people and that the county may try to open up some last-minute shelters.
These additional shelters will be “minimally staffed,” Fassold said, and evacuees will have to bring their own supplies. Pets will not be allowed.

A 22-year-old man will face murder charges in the deaths of four people found at a Massachusetts home, authorities said.
Police in Groton found two women and a man dead inside a house and another woman’s body outside on Friday night. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said the victims— an elderly man and woman and two middle-aged women —appeared to have died of blunt force trauma. Their identities and other details had not been released Saturday.
Neighbor Wagner Alcocer, 52, said the suspect, Orion Krause, showed up at his back door Friday evening, naked and muddy with blood splattered on his face, and said he “just murdered four people” after asking for help.
“I was totally shaken,” Alcocer told The Sun newspaper in Lowell, Massachusetts. “I didn’t want him to run, so I told him to go to the backyard and sit in a chair.”
When asked where his clothes were, Krause told Alcocer they were in the woods, Alcocer said.
Alcocer said he contacted the authorities after Krause was seated and two officers showed up and spoke to Krause. Alcocer and his wife, Thekla, gave police a white sheet to cover him. Krause was questioned and taken away on a stretcher.
Alcocer said he was in disbelief about the deaths until police later confirmed the killings had taken place.
“Your neighbors. It’s shocking. At first, I couldn’t believe it,” he told The Boston Globe. “He’s just a kid. How could someone have the strength?”
Alcocer didn’t immediately return a message left for him by The Associated Press on Saturday.
Authorities said Krause will be charged with four counts of murder. A possible weapon was found. It wasn’t known Saturday if Krause is represented by a lawyer.
Ryan called the slayings “a situation of tragic family violence.”
Groton Police Chief Donald Palma Jr. said the killings weren’t a random act and “the town is safe.”
There is no word on a possible motive.
The Sun reported that the killings are believed to be the first homicide case in Groton since 1996. The town is located about 43 miles northwest of Boston.
According to the town’s website , a community vigil will be held Sunday for the four victims.
