A few days ago, SoJones.com broke the news about Vanessa Simmons’ newest venture, a swimwear line called “Rose by Vanessa Jean” that will be launched at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim 2013 in Miami on July 22, 2012. However, the news isn’t complete until we hear it from the designer herself. Asmara Wreksono from SoJones.com talked to Vanessa Simmons in an exclusive interview.
You’ve been missing from the spotlight for quite a while. How are you?
I am really happy! After finishing up almost six years of reality TV on MTV, I really just took some time for myself and focused my mind to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
Congratulations on the launch of your swimwear line, Rose by Vanessa Jean. Why swimwear and not “regular” clothing?
Well, the line actually started with me designing for myself little corsets I would wear with jeans. With my friends all asking for me to make them one, so then it began where I started with lingerie (which will be available late summer) and quickly expanded to swimwear (available this summer) and my love for the beach and pool.
Are you involved in designing? Where do you get your inspiration from?
Yes, I am very much involved with everything from marketing to designing. I have been very hands-on with this project from the beginning. My inspiration for the line is to be worn by women all around the globe. My goal is to capture the true essence of as many ladies as possible. Rose is reminiscent of a rose, very beautiful to look at, but when you look closely, you’ll see a rose has thorns all up and down the stem. To me those thorns represent our own women’s flaws, imperfections, and journey, which makes us all imperfectly perfect!
Do you have any tips for women on choosing the right swimwear?
My tip for choosing the right swimwear starts and ends with comfort, how you feel in the piece. Because the last thing you want is to not feel great in the swimsuit you choose.
Your sister Angela is busy with her own hair extension line. Are you competing with each other with your own lines now?
Creating Pastry will always be a special bond that Ang and I share, and we are always supportive of each other. In my family, we always support each other as we all pursue individual interests, so any pressure or competition I feel is with myself and striving to be the best that I can be.
How’s Pastry Shoes doing?
Pastry is doing phenomenal. It’s in more countries than I can count right now and has gone above and beyond everyone’s expectations. LovePastry.com, I am so proud to have been able to create something that was so well received.
What’s next for Vanessa Simmons? Clothing line, movies, music albums maybe?
Definitely movies! And some TV!
