In reality, though, the latest campaign does not look any different from past ads created by the famous lingerie company. After all, Victoria’s Secret angels has always been recognized for their toned and slim physique. However, with the words “The Perfect Body” splashed across the ad featuring a slew of tall and thin models, it just doesn’t seem right.
The controversial ad was first spotted in the U.K. and customers took to Twitter to voice out their concerns, noting that it promoted an “unhealthy” body image for women.
In a petition signed by over 9,000 UK students seen in Change.org, the British students criticized “The Perfect Body” ad:
“Every day women are bombarded with advertisements aimed at making them feel insecure about their bodies, in the hope that they will spend money on products that will supposedly make them happier and more beautiful. This marketing campaign is harmful. It fails to celebrate the amazing diversity of women’s bodies by choosing to call only one body type ‘perfect.’”
The college students also created a hashtag movement on social media, asking people to tweet their disapproval using the hashtag #iamperfect.
Meanwhile, another underwear company called Dear Kate, held that the lingerie industry as a whole “can and should do better”.
“The creators of the ad probably didn’t think twice about the message it is sending, and to us, it’s irresponsible marketing.”
Dear Kate also took to Twitter to create an alternative of “The Perfect Body” campaign.
