Central Ohio Mom Keeps Facebook Clean From Her Living Room

COLUMBUS, Ohio –
For many of us, social networking web sites like Facebook are great ways to stay in touch with friends and loved ones.
But as with just about everything involving the Internet, dangers can lurk even in the most innocent of places. These dangers can include child porn.
Now, one central Ohio woman is taking it upon herself to clean up the web sites and keep them safe for children.
From inside her Washington Court House living room, Julie Ross is doing her part to keep Facebook clean.
“We’re going after Facebook pedophiles, child porn basically,” said Ross.
Six months ago, she created a private Facebook group to track down child porn on Facebook.
It’s something she said has turned out to be an eye-opening and sickening experience.
“We have seen some things. You’d cry yourself to sleep seeing some of the things that we’ve seen,” said Ross.
She said one page usually leads to another, and then another and so on.
When she or the twelve other people in her Facebook group find something inappropriate, they report it immediately to the CyberTipline.
It appears as if Ross’ efforts are paying off. In just half a year, she said her group has helped close down approximately 100 Facebook pages.
“For each one of the pages that we’re bringing down, we know there is however many kids, it could be hundreds of kids they’ve already gotten to,” said Ross.
Two kids who won’t become victims are Julie’s own. She doesn’t allow them on Facebook.
“Not that I don’t trust them, but you never know what somebody could talk your kids into saying or doing,” she said.
To keep others’ kids safe, she said she won’t give up on her mission to clean Facebook.
“We’ll probably never get them (pages) all but we are going to keep fighting it,” she said.

Google Plus (Google+) must open the network now

Google+ suffering a traffic decline, a single digit decline.
Should Google open the gates of Google Plus now? Absolutely.
We’ve been testing the Google Plus social networking site for almost a month now, and we’re still impressed because it’s a new social networking site that offers a lot of NEW features. It’s also considered by some as the mashup of Facebook and Twitter maybe because of its way of connecting people — and we should agree.
But aside from the core features of Twitter and Facebook, Google Plus also offers video and voice calls integrated by the feature from Gmail, and of course the video conferencing feature called “Hangouts” that allows up to 10 members to video chat and watch YouTube together. Google Plus is also available for the iPhone and Android as a social networking application that supports IM with a service called “Huddle.”
According to Ancestry.com founder Paul Allen, as of July 10, Google Plus was serving 7.3 million — and after three days, Google Plus has reached the 10 million members mark that Google CEO Larry Page has confirmed during his company’s last earnings report. The data alone (from two weeks ago) have shown that Google can attract social networking consumers, in fact, Facebook has quickly responded to the video calling features of the Google Plus site by offering its own video calling service provided by Skype.
Now, reports are claiming that Google Plus is facing a traffic decline. According to Read Write Web, Google Plus traffic for last week only has recorded a 3% decline compared to its week before performance. Yeah, only 3% and tons of websites have heralded the report faster than a speeding train. What’s with the buzz? Well, it looks like some websites hate the idea of Google taking over the internet world.
But how can Google avoid the Google+ traffic decline? Well, they should open the service now. By soft-launching Google Plus and allowing consumers to register freely, Google could attract millions of new members that could multiply because new members are theoretically motivated to invite more members in order for them to enjoy the video chatting features of the new social networking site — and of course, to “Huddle” to save money by sending less text messages.
Google is expected to change its policy regarding Google Profiles by July 31st. According to the search engine giant, they will start deleting private profiles tomorrow because the company “believe that using Google Profiles to help people find and connect with you online is how the product is best used and private profiles don’t allow this, so we have decided to require all profiles to be public.”
Apparently, the deletion of private Google Profiles could be related to the upcoming public launch of Google+ which includes the relaunch of the realtime search tab of the search engine giant that will include public posts of members.
