The man launched legal proceedings against the company when his 12-year-old daughter posted explicit photographs of herself online.
He fears she has put herself in extreme danger from paedophiles who may be using Facebook to target young people.
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous to protect his daughter’s identity, told UTV he was disgusted and horrified when he accessed her account and saw the images.
He says every time he got her to close one account on Facebook, she would open another – so now, as a last resort, he is suing the company to try and ensure her safety.
The case is the first of its kind in the UK and is being taken by Londonderry solicitor Hilary Carmichael.
She is accusing Facebook of failing to properly verify the age of its users.
“This girl has been able to organise various pages, giving false dates of birth and various variations of her name,” Hilary Carmichael told UTV.
“And yet there is no control by Facebook over the age of anyone who access their site and who creates pages.”
The solicitor has established an online survey to find other parents with similar concerns – in just over 24 hours nearly 400 people have responded.
One mother claims she found a picture she had posted of her disabled daughter was being used in an adults-only site.
Facebook has released a statement defending its child protection measures.
The company says it “invests heavily in educating people on how to stay safe” and has a “good working relationship with law enforcement agencies”.
It added that information submitted through the site’s “robust reporting infrastructure” is prioritised “to monitor offensive or potentially dangerous content.”
Facebook requires members to be over 13 years old but does not use any checks.
It is now thought the internet giant could be sued by hundreds of families.

With the recent announcement that Facebook now surpasses one trillion page views per month during both June and July, CrowdControlHQ, leading UK providers of social media brand protection software, is looking to stress the importance of using multiple social media profiles to increase visibility as Facebook use increases.
The survey, conducted by DoubleClick, found that Facebook received approximately 870 million unique visitors in June and 860 million unique visitors in July – already exceeding the known number of users by more than 100 million. Each visitor was reported to have averaged approximately 1,160 pageviews in July and 40 per visit.
James Leavesley, co-founder of CrowdControlHQ commented: “These figures should illustrate how essential it is for brands to market themselves to this ever-growing social audience. As networks such as Google+ appear and draw a larger audience towards them, it is imperative for brands to command a strong social standing across multiple social networks. This ensures a brand is commanding high visibility and has the opportunity to reach a wide-ranging audience.”
James Leavesley, believes these figures should be enough to illustrate to any brand marketer the importance of using social networks as a marketing tool. James believes these figures don’t necessarily illustrate that social network users are looking to utilise Facebook to follow and engage with fans, but this is where the necessity for a suitable outreach strategy becomes important. A brand with a well-constructed social media strategy will be able to entice users to follow and engage, thereby increasing the brand’s visibility to social network users.
With this in mind, James concludes brands must look to construct a suitable strategy across numerous networks. With one network alone receiving such a high level of traffic, were a brand to have a number of profiles across several networks, the likelihood of increasing outreach and visibility increases greatly.
CrowdControlHQ provides dedicated social media management software to assist brands in their efforts to manage and engage with social media followers. CrowdControlHQ’s social networking software allows brands to control multiple social media profiles from a single source, making it easier than ever to successfully manage numerous social networking profiles at once.
