Review: When the Lights Go Out at Carr Winery

This new show began simply, with a disheveled actor lounging on a love seat and a solitary singer, Leo Gallo, using samples and an effects pedal to layer his own voice into a bed for short and bluesy improvisation on the show’s title phrase, “when the lights go out.” But what began simply quickly turned intricate, as projected images and rock music coalesced with dance, aerial acrobatics, and expressionistic vignettes to form an intriguingly enigmatic whole. Although aerial performers have become a regular feature of cirque and festival shows over the past few years, the presentation of the art form here, in particular the hammock/sling dance of Autumn Phillips, brought something new to the genre. As Phillips twirled, inverted, and twisted in a spotlight of flashing polka dots, drummer Kourtney Klein augmented the music on a snare, all the while clad in an elegant, fitted, white wedding dress. This might give you some idea of the eclecticism and vivid imagery of the show.

The evening’s hard-hitting rock soundtrack was matched by a continuous film projection that pulled no punches in regard to content. For example, the song “I’m Afraid of Americans” by David Bowie featuring Nine Inch Nails was accompanied by documentary images of Ku Klux Klan rallies. Not all of the numbers were so political. In fact, the dominant note was an erotic one, with dancers in lingerie gyrating in and around the audience. Perhaps the evening’s most intriguing number involved performer Athena Sterig playing a scene seated on a bed and holding a car’s steering wheel. As Sterig swayed and spun the wheel on an imaginary wild ride, the projection behind her brought the audience into the car with her. While the trip may not have been totally safe, the sense was that the majority of those in the crowd enjoyed the lift and would hop in again.

She had just picked out a little something from high-end store Neimen Marcus in Beverly Hills, California.

And maybe that’s what Reese Witherspoon was chatting about on her smart phone as she made her way back to her car on Monday.

The 38-year-old was her usual smiley self as she strolled along in the sunshine holding the pink spotty device, and showed off her naturally tanned legs in the process.

The Walk The Line star looked casual, comfy and chic in a light blue denim shirt over a floaty black miniskirt with white dashes and grey suede high-heeled booties with a cuff at the ankle.

Her side-parted blonde hair framed her beautiful face, which looked to be free of make-up, and she covered her blue eyes with on-trend cat-eye sunglasses.

Reese accessorised with a large beige and cream leather handbag that she carried over one shoulder and the intriguing Neiman Marcus bag over the other.

The mother-of-three, who is married to agent Jim Toth, has plenty to be happy about.

On Thursday E! Online reported that actress’s new lifestyle company has been named Draper James.

The venture will sell an eclectic range of products including bed and bath items, lingerie, handbags, kitchenware, fragrance and cosmetics,
furniture, swimwear, stationery, swaddling blankets and
even plastic storage containers.

Reese is also gearing up to produce and star in the action-comedy Don’t Mess With Texas, opposite Sofia Vergara. She plays a police officer on the run with her prisoner, Sofia.

The star is set to star in Wish List, a Disney comedy about a little girl with a big imagination who makes 10 wishes as she tosses a coin into a wishing well.

The wishes begin to come true when the coin finally reaches the bottom 25 years later – the little girl now an ambitious career woman.

Jim is Reese’s second husband. Her first marriage to Ryan Philippe lasted seven years and they have a daughter Ava, 14, and son Deacon, 10.

She began dating Jim in February 2010 and the pair married in Ojai, California in March 2011. Their son Tennessee was born in September 2012.
