PORT ELGIN -

Jenny O – also known as Jennifer O’Reilly, photographer and standup comedian from Port Elgin, had them laughing in the aisles – and alongside the runway, at the Lingerie Rocks fundraising fashion show at Maple Hall in Port Elgin, June 4.

The brainchild of Moko Heathers, owner of Belle of the Boudoir in Port Elgin, the event was the third for Heathers.

The show was a follow-up to last year’s successful Cirque de Sexy, held at Lakeshore Recreation, which raised approximately $5,000 to benefit Women’s House Serving Bruce Grey and the Canadian Mental Health Association of Grey-Bruce.

This year’s benefit, Heathers’ third, combined rock music and lingerie, with 10 models – six women and four men – all from Saugeen Shores, who brought on the attitude but kept it classy as they strutted along the catwalk, all for a good cause.

In a telephone interview June 6, Heathers said “attendance was way down,” with only 70 tickets sold, compared with the first two events which sold out, peaking at 200 tickets at last year’s show.

On the other hand, Heathers added, “We live in a great area, and the people that were in attendance were amazing” and gave generously.

Local merchants pitched in, donating items for a silent auction, and Wismer House provided drinks and appetizers. Funds raised by the silent auction, ticket sales and a raffle were earmarked exclusively for Women’s House. The amount raised was not available at press time, but Heathers said it would be announced shortly.

Although she’s had some pushback about the show’s revealing garb, Heathers said she has been asked to do the show by Tiffany Love of Women’s House every year, and gets great support from the not-for-profit.

“The show is to empower women and make them feel better about themselves,” she said, adding her models are “all shapes and sizes,” and she keeps it tasteful, fun and playful.

Although she’s not sure if she’ll do another show next year, Heathers said both she and O’Reilly are passionate about fundraising for the women’s shelter, having both known women who have needed the Shelter’s services. Heathers added, “I wish they would have had a woman’s shelter back 50-100 years ago for family members of mine that could have used it.”
