Polaris Marketing Research Inc. announced today the results of its recent study of American consumer behavior on Facebook and LinkedIn. In the last 60 days, fully 59 percent of online Americans posted something to their own Facebook page, as compared to 10 percent who posted onto their own LinkedIn page. Similarly, 61 percent of online Americans posted to someone else’s Facebook page, while only 8 percent of respondents posted something to someone else’s LinkedIn page in the last 60 days.
Facebook and LinkedIn activity also varied by demographics:
- Female respondents were significantly more likely to post onto Facebook while male respondents were significantly more likely to use LinkedIn.
- Respondents under the age of 50 were significantly more likely to post to Facebook or LinkedIn.
- Respondents with higher incomes ($75,000 or higher) are significantly more likely to post to Facebook or LinkedIn than respondents with incomes less than $30,000.
“Clearly, in our survey, Facebook activity in general far exceeds activity on LinkedIn. It’s interesting that the disparity is also evidenced in their respective market valuations,” said Polaris President Jan Carlson.
Polaris conducted online surveys with a representative sample of 1,000 American consumers during the week of July 18, 2011.

Facebook rolls out online education centre
Facebook is looking to grab the interest of small business owners who haven’t tried social media marketing yet, notes RICG.
Called Facebook for Business, the educational programme runs entrepreneurs through the basics of maintaining a presence on the social network.
First, small business owners are shown how to set up a brand page, using eye-catching photos and company information. Then, Facebook explains how to launch a social media marketing strategy, build a community of fans and analyse metrics to generate better results from digital marketing efforts on the social network.
“Facebook allows small businesses to create rich social experiences, build lasting relationships and amplify the most powerful type of marketing – word of mouth,” a Facebook spokesperson told GigaOm. “We created Facebook.com/business to make it even easier for people to reach these objectives and grow.”
According to Equimedia, small brands will be able to learn crucial skills such as using the Facebook platform for apps and social plug-ins and benefit from tips about how to create business pages and ads, enhancing social marketing.
Facebook officials claim the company had invoiced a new Web page, which would be searched at Facebook .com/business and would be publicised as an online education centre, reports News Tonight.
The Web page would be given many informative online directions on business growth for example, as how to set up a profile page, generate embattled public notices, business deals, cooperating with the customer and most importantly then getting their feedbacks.
