After five decades of red lacy lingerie flying off the shelves at Christmas there has been a shift in buying habits with the colour purple reigning at the tills.

High Street giant Debenhams is reporting that sales of purple bras and pants are up 54 per cent as men sway away from the predictable red slinky numbers.

The revelation came as millions of men
braved shopping centres across the country on the last full shopping
weekend before Christmas.

Debenhams reports sales of purple bras and pants are up 54 per cent as men sway away from the predictable red slinky numbers

Yesterday psychologists said that they believed the sudden colour shift might be a reflection of rapidly changing economic and social values.

‘After being the automatic No 1 choice for the past five decades, red pants and bras have finally been replaced,’ said Debenhams spokesman Michelle Dowdall.

‘Me are relying on purple underwear to work its magic this year.’

Purple is said to be the colour of choice for people who put security, mediation and a sense of self worth before risk-taking and reckless moves.

‘It is clear that the financial crisis is having a major impact in the bedroom as well as the Euro zone.

‘Reckless red my have been a thrilling experience for many years but those times have been replaced with passionate but purposeful purple.’

WE GO UNDIE-COVER WITH TOP LINGERIE TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS!

TIS the season of good thrill! Racy undies are one of the top festive shopping items with a survey revealing that 85% of women reckon nookie is more likely if there’s sexy lingerie in their Christmas stocking.

So what should you buy? The boss of Ultimo lingerie, Michelle Mone, has launched a new wish list for guys to put under the noses of their partners, then take along to stores.

But with many blokes wandering clueless around the nation’s lingerie departments at this time of year we decided to ask Michelle for her top tips help the guys pick the right sets for Christmas.

Armed with her advice, Star reporter James Moore went along with top model Charlotte McKenna, 23, to try them out at (MUST INCLUDE) Debenhams’ flagship store on London’s Oxford Street.

Here are Michelle’s 12 lingerie tips for Christmas…

THE 12 SEXY TIPS OF XMAS

1.Size them up

Amazingly, according to recent figures, nearly two thirds of blokes buy the wrong size underwear for their partner. Michelle says: “It’s the biggest mistake you can make. Simply look in her underwear drawer to find her get sizes for her bra and knickers. If you dare, borrow some to take with you to the store. A bra size is generally expressed in inches, whilst cup sizes typically start at an A and work their way up the alphabet.”

2. Do your research.

Once you’ve got her sizes spend a few minutes on the web. Michelle says: “Go online to explore what’s available in-store before hitting the shops. This will help with the nerves.”

3. Ask for advice

Don’t be shy of the assistants. Michelle says: “There’s no point in being embarrassed. If you’re unsure ask an assistant in the lingerie department. Describe your partner and what she’s like – you could even take along a picture. The staff will help you make a better choice.”

4.Watch the OMG factor!

You might be tempted by that seriously saucy number, but take care. Says Michelle: “Remember to buy something that she’s actually likely to wear and feel comfortable in. There’s no point in spending lots of money and then finding she’s horrified by what you’ve chosen. Go for sophisticated and sexy, rather than trashy.”

5. Set them off

But don’t be too boring either. Michelle says: “Christmas only happens once a year, so you do want to buy her something a little bit special. Going for a matching set with suspenders can be a good idea.”

6. Style is everything

Think about what she already wears and what her personality is. Is she into frillies or thongs?

Lingerie is not all the same. Michelle says: “Some will suit one kind of woman but not another. Most women prefer pretty and feminine to overtly sexy.”

7. Know your bras

Would she suit a balcony or plunge? Michelle says: “If she’s proud of her bosom a plunge bra, pushes the boobs together so that the breasts ‘kiss’. Or you could go for a balcony bra, which pushes the breasts up.”

8. Flatter her best features

Michelle says: “If she hates her stomach go for a sexy yet concealing corset or basque. If she likes her bottom, go for a slinky thong. For the more outgoing lady, push the boat out with bold patterns and colours.”

9. Colour her beautiful

Beware that shocking red Christmas set though. A massive 89 per cent of women say that men buy the wrong colour. Michelle says the clue to what she wants might be back in her underwear drawer: “Know your partner. What colours does she usually wear? A lot of men buy red, but many women don’t like it. If in doubt black lingerie is usually always an excellent choice – it’s both sexy and stylish.”

10.Double up

Michelle advises buying two sets to play safe. She says: “Why not buy one very glamorous set especially for Christmas and one set that she can wear every day. That way you’re covered.”

11. No need to shell out

Michelle says: “A lot of men end up spending a fortune because they think they’re embarrassed and rush it. But you shouldn’t have to spend more than about £40 to get a nice set of lingerie.” Though blokes should be warned off one bad habit – a recent survey revealed that three per cent bought their ladies underwear from eBay.

12. Get it gift wrapped

Presentation is everything according to Michelle. She says: “Most stores will gift wrap the lingerie for you. Box it up with a ribbon. And remember not to leave the prices on!”

CHARLOTTE’S VERDICT:

Sporting a leopard print set of bra and knickers that I’d picked out for her Charlotte said: “To be honest I wouldn’t really wear this normally.

Last year my boyfriend spent lots of money on underwear that just wasn’t me. I couldn’t even pretend that I liked it. The navy blue or the pink set would be much more my sort of thing. Men need all the help they can get when it comes to choosing the right lingerie – so don’t be embarrassed, just ask!”

MUST INCLUDE: Charlotte was wearing: Ultimo blue set, thong £14.50, bra £28/pink thong £12.50, balcony bra £28. La Senza, leopard print set, knickers £8, bra £28. Jasper Conran lace top stockings, £7, Jasper Conran suspender belt, £12.50.
