Lingerie footy devalues athletes

Promoters argue the LFL is not just titillation for the blokes (pun intended) but a serious sport, with serious athletes and no doubt serious money.

But as I asked my kids, why can’t we appreciate the skill of these female footy players when they have all their clothes on?

Not only do they look ridiculous running around in nothing but bra, panties, long socks and gridiron padding, their knickers aren’t really suitable for a rough and tumble game of American football. Instead of Victoria’s Secret, these gals should be wearing Bonds Cottontails – much more appropriate for paddock shenanigans.

Supporters of the sport say the women have consented to take part and have signed the ‘‘accidental nudity’’ clause with no coercion, and the girls are getting paid a lot to do it.

That all may be true, but what they choose to ignore is that these women, who are elite athletes in their own right, should be paid for their prowess and sporting ability, without having to do it partially clothed.

They probably train as hard as the men in the sport, but can only get the recognition if they strip down to the bare basics.

If it isn’t just about entertaining the blokes, then why don’t we stipulate that Benji Marshal, Todd Carney and Willy Mason play in just a pair of Jockeys, their boots and beautiful smile – if they want to be paid what they’re worth?
