Tool will help pharma companies inform side effects reported by patients on Facebook to FDA

MOUNT ARLINGTON, N.J., Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/Semantelli, a New Jersey based start-up, announced today the release of Facebook AETracker-  a unique solution to help pharmaceutical companies maintain Facebook pages after the August 15th  deadline imposed by the social networking giant. In May this year, Facebook announced it will enable public feedback and comments to encourage bidirectional dialogue on pages created by pharmaceutical companies, ending an exclusive privilege it had given pharma since facebook launched its business pages.

Facebook AETracker helps pharma companies track Adverse Drug Reactions and Product Misinformation in user comments on company sponsored Facebook pages in real-time with additional workflow to report them to FDA.

“Our ability to track Adverse Events, Product Misinformation and other potential threats real-time in Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels should make FDA happy. This allows pharma companies stay on Facebook, and at the same time frees them to further explore the power of social media without waiting for guidelines or fearing regulatory impacts.  Social Media is just another channel. We should treat it as such.  It can play a major role in improving health outcome.” said Siva Nadarajah CEO of Semantelli.

In addition to identifying Adverse Events and Misinformation, the Semantelli product will also spot possible threats and hacks that may impact the reputation of a company.

In July of this year, pharma giant Pfizer’s Facebook page was hacked by a group called Script Kiddies. They posted anti-Pfizer messages and angry language aiming at the company. The UK based group also added unflattering profile images to the page and posted links to news articles critical of the firm. The group also claimed responsbility for the Fox News hack last month.

“This is a natural addition to our enterprise reputation platform. Recent hack on Pfizer’s Facebook page is a clear example that tools that can spot threats are necessary to augment human moderation. Our offering is an end-to-end real-time solution that combines technology with traditional moderation”  added Siva Nadarajah.

You missed it: The Facebook phone is already here

It’s become clear that smartphones are going to be increasingly ubiquitous for the foreseeable future. And a recent study indicates that many people are using those devices to access Facebook more than for anything else.

Facebook is now one of the top three providers of email messaging on mobile phones, according to a recent survey conducted by market research firm CCS Insights. In fact, the survey shows such growth for Facebook across all applications — from video viewing to social networking to mobile messaging — that CCS Insight predicts that Facebook could soon transcend offerings from industry giants such as Apple, Google and Microsoft.

“Facebook is fast becoming the default destination for all things mobile,” CCS Insight director Paolo Pescatore said in a press release accompanying the research report. “The mobile phone is now one of the most prolific consumer electronics devices on the planet.”

It turns out that even though the Palo Alto, Calif.-based social networking company does not yet have its own mobile operating system or hardware products, Facebook is already a major player in all things mobile in its native U.S. and abroad. CCS conducted its survey of mobile Internet usage in May 2011 with 7,000 respondents in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, U.K., and the U.S. Based on the information CCS culled from Europe, Facebook is swiftly supplanting regional social networking sites among users many regions there, such as Tuenti in Spain.

And Facebook has no plans to slow down its growth on the mobile front. The company is said to be working on its own mobile browser platform, powered by the quickly growing markup language HTML5, so that the mobile experience of its social networking site can be uniform across all devices in the future. Will anyone be using their mobile phones for actual phone calls anymore? In the years ahead, the answer may be no.
