Forty-five-year-old Kevin Esterly, arrested Saturday in Mexico with 16-year-old Amy Yu of Allentown, has known the girl at least eight years, according to relatives. Police say they developed a ‘secretive relationship.’
2009 to 2010: Amy Yu, daughter of Miu Luu in Allentown, meets Kevin Esterly, his wife, Stacey, and their family at a church in Lowhill Township, western Lehigh County, according to both families. Amy is 7 or 8 years old. Kevin Esterly is in his late 30s.
2013-2017: Kevin Esterly shows increasing interest in Amy Yu, inviting her to join his family on many camping and beach trips, according to both families. She becomes close friends with the oldest of Esterly’s four daughters.
July 2017: Esterly’s wife, Stacey, and Yu’s mother become increasingly uncomfortable with and eventually suspicious of Esterly’s claims of a father-daughter-like relationship with Yu, according to Stacey Esterly’s lawyer and Yu’s mother.
November 2017: Unknown to Amy Yu’s mother, Esterly for the first time signs Yu out of her school at the end of the school day at Lehigh Valley Academy Charter School, in Hanover Township, Northampton County, according to police and Yu’s mother. He gives Amy a ride and she returns home that day, police say.
February 2018: By now, Kevin Esterly, 45, who has a family home in Lowhill Township, has rented an apartment near 14th and Hamilton streets in Allentown, less than four blocks from 16-year-old Amy Yu’s home.
Feb. 9: Miu Luu, Amy Yu’s mother, drives out in the afternoon to pick up her daughter at the Lehigh Valley Academy Charter School, but she’s told Amy already has been picked up by Esterly, according to police and Luu. Luu learns that Amy has listed Esterly as her stepfather in school documents and, since November, Esterly has signed her out from the school 10 times without her mother’s knowledge or permission, according to police and Luu. Luu confronts Esterly about the secret pickups and text messages to her daughter, but he calls suspicions about him “lies and speculation,” according to Luu.
Feb. 10: At Esterly’s Lowhill Township home, he snatches his wife’s “cellphone away from her to prevent her from viewing his Facebook posts,” and she rips his shirt as she tries to stop him from leaving the house, police say. A state trooper is dispatched to break up the fight, according to police. The disturbance is over Amy Yu, according to Stacey Esterly.
