An un-retouched photo of model Cindy Crawford  has sparked a discussion on social media sites over body image and the use of software to alter photos.

Support came on Twitter from women applauding Marie Claire magazine for showing Crawford as she looks without photo retouching. The person who first leaked the photo suggested it was for an April cover of Marie Claire.

However, according to a blog post from the  magazine, the image was leaked from a 2013 photo shoot for Marie Claire Mexico and Latin America featuring Crawford modeling black lingerie.

The un-retouched photos were not used on the magazine’s cover, or the inside spread.

In an online blog, Marie Claire addressed the photo, saying, “No matter where the photo came from, it’s an enlightenment–we’ve always known Crawford was beautiful, but seeing her like this only makes us love her more. And as she told us at the premiere of her new documentary last week: “I really think–at any age–it’s learning to be comfortable in your own skin. …If women would treat themselves with the same kind of love they give to their friends, that would be such a great gift we could give ourselves. …What makes you the most attractive is self-confidence. That’s what people see.”

Crawford talked about body image in an earlier interview with the magazine.

“I was never one of the ‘skinny’ skinny girls who could eat whatever they wanted, so I certainly exercise and try to eat right. But at the same time, I try to be a good role model for my daughter in terms of just accepting myself, not saying ‘Does this make me look fat?’ or ‘I can’t eat that’ or ‘I’m on a diet.’ “
