LAS CRUCES GT;GT; With a bright blue roof, foil-covered windows and prominent signage cautioning security cameras, Michael Brumm’s home stands out on its block of Kansas Street, near the city’s Mesquite Historic District.
Teenage girls told Las Cruces police that Brumm, a 38-year-old software engineer, held at the home numerous parties with illegal drugs and alcohol. Some of these gatherings featured high school girls as lingerie models watched by older men wearing only boxers, according to a complaint filed in Magistrate Court.
One of those girls, now 16, told police that she had attended the parties, dating Brumm since January and having sex with him since May, the complaint states.
Police arrested Brumm on Wednesday for criminal sexual penetration and contributing to the delinquency of minors. Brumm, who posted bond and left the Doña Ana County Detention Center on Thursday morning, faces eight counts, all fourth-degree felonies.
But the investigation is ongoing, Las Cruces Police Department spokesman Dan Trujillo said Thursday, and details in the complaint suggest more charges could be filed related to the men partying with teen girls.
The investigation began because the father of one of the 15-year-old girls reported to police that Brumm had taken her to a “rave party” in El Paso on Aug. 30.
The girl told police she was one of four teen girls Brumm drove to the Sun City Music Festival, staying with them in a hotel near the airport. While there, Brumm brought them a bucket of food and alcoholic drink the girls referred to as a “panty dropper” — pink lemonade, Mountain Dew and vodka, the complaint states. The girl said they took cocaine, ecstacy and marijuana in the room.
Brumm referred to the event Aug. 26, posting on his personal Facebook page: “Is anyone else going to the Sun City Music Festival and staying at the Wyndham Hotel and Water Park this weekend?”
Part of the URL for Brumm’s Facebook page is “like2pleaseyou.”
Earlier in August, the 15-year-old girl told police, Brumm escorted her and his 16-year-old girlfriend to a lingerie party in the High Range area. Trujillo said police are still investigating the precise location.
At this party, the 15-year-old girl told police, Brumm wore a “pink fairy costume and he was going around and grabbing girls on the butt.”
An unidentified older man tried to kiss the 15-year-old girl, the complaint states, She told him her age. His response, “We don’t ask ages here.”
Another 15-year-old girl told police she would organize, via Facebook, similar lingerie parties at Brumm’s house. They described an indoor hot tub, bathing suits for the girls, mannequins adorned with lingerie and a stripper pole inside Brumm’s home.
After obtaining a search warrant, police found those items and others including, in his bedroom, a yellow school notebook belonging to Brumm’s teen girlfriend, her clothes and photos of the couple.
In his interview with police, Brumm acknowledged that he was in a relationship with the teen girl and bought her a cell phone so they could text each other, but denied having sex with her.
He also admitted to having the parties at his home, but said he did not give the teens alcohol or drugs.
Brumm’s teen girlfriend told police his older male friends knew of their intimate relationship and approved, the complaint states. Brumm denied that too.
He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Kasady Absher, Brumm’s 19-year-old roommate, has also been charged. She has been charged with three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Absher’s statements to police included in the complaint seem to corroborate much of what the teens said. She described hearing sex when the girls were there. Absher told police she initially thought one of the girls was older, then realized they were underage, but did not know their exact ages.
Brumm told police he had asked Absher to move out because of drug use and that he didn’t trust her, the complaint states.
Neither Brumm nor Absher has a criminal record, according to online court records.
A neighbor who was loading a truck Thursday, said he has lived in the neighborhood more than 70 years and never saw anything unusual at Brumm’s home.
Brumm has lived a the home since at least 2006, when he took possession of it in a divorce, court records show.
Police “have reason to believe other teenage girls were involved with Brumm or participated in the lingerie parties,” according to a news release.
Anyone with information is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or Las Cruces Police at 575-526-0795.
One of the 15-year-old girls told police, the complaint states, that Brumm and his 16-year-old girlfriend discussed having an open relationship — as Brumm and with previous girlfriends — but reportedly decided against it out of concern that somebody would learn her age.
