Mayim Bialik, formerly of TV’s Blossom and now one of the stars of The Big Bang Theory, is also a highly intelligent (she has a Ph.D. in neuroscience) mother of two who frequently blogs for Kveller.com. Her latest post is called “The Problem With That Giant Billboard of Ariana Grande.” In it, she wonders what exactly it is that Ariana Grande does professionally, and why does she have to do it in lingerie?

As a self-professed socially conservative mother, Bialik wants to talk about the overtly sexy billboards her sons might see. “There is one for Ariana Grande, and I will go ahead and admit I have no idea who she is or what she does,” the actress writes. “Based on the billboard, she sells lingerie. Or stiletto heels. Or plastic surgery because every woman over 22 wishes she has that body, I’m sure.”

Bialik correctly guesses Grande’s actual profession, but she’s still unclear why the singer has to do it entirely catering to the male gaze. “And if she has a talent (is she a singer?), then why does she have to sell herself in lingerie? I mean, I know that society is patriarchal and women are expected to be sexy and sexually available no matter what we do in society, but I guess now I need to explain that to my sons?”

What good do these scantily clad ads do for society, Bialik wants to know. Well, they drive home the age-old advertising adage that “sex sells.” Beyond that, they get people on the more conservative end of the spectrum blogging to ask why we continue to cater to said formula.

This age-old debate was around long before Mayim Bialik and Ariana Grande, and it’ll be around long after. Blossom may want to watch her back, though, because Grande’s legion of fans is growing by the day. And, they won’t take kindly to their everything being equated to a prostitute. (Huffington Post)
