When it comes to swimwear or lingerie, function often prevails over fashion. A beautiful print won’t look so hot if your bikini bottoms are around your ankles after you dominate the death slide. And that crochet suit that looked so great in the changing room, will be at the centre of your whirlpool of hatred as you are left with an unholy, holey tan line. But that doesn’t mean that trends and swimwear can’t find common sand, considering your needs and your favourite summer 2014 looks, you can track down your beachwear soulmate.

Covering up is cool again. Thankfully, the one piece is back and just as chic as the bikini this season. 50s-inspired, large, polka dot prints, with a flattering sweetheart cut neckline enhances fuller figures. HM and Matalan are awash with stylish swimming costumes, featuring tiger faces and textured patterns. If you’re stuck between baring-all or wearing more, select a costume with cut-outs. Geometric cut-out shapes around the waist may mess up your tan, but are very flattering and a happy, in between choice.

If you’re bikini loyal, high-waisted briefs or the ‘skirtini,’ are slightly less daunting alternatives to the spaghetti strapped, triangle bikini. High-waisted briefs combine vintage cool with swimming practicality, and a skirtini is pretty, youthful, and offers more coverage. Topshop have taken girly to the next level with lazer-cut frills and lace-style holes on the hems of their bikinis, while HM are offering sports inspired pieces made of jersey, neoprene with elastic waistbands. The runways have declared florals washed up for summer 2014, and have flourished with foliage instead, showing large, leafy prints. Selecting pieces with details such as zips and scalloped edges can add a subtle touch of high-end, without shelling out too much money.

Accessorising for the beach or pool is just as important as the swimwear itself, as you will probably spend just as much time beside the water as in it. An oversized slogan t-shirt, inspired by Files A Papa, looks tomboy and elegant simultaneously. Thrown over a bikini, this will protect your shoulders from the sun and make a game of volleyball less of a worry about wobbles.

Leather may seem like an odd beachwear trend, but can be quite useful. Follow the example set by Hermes and tie a tan coloured leather belt around your swimming costume. Waist defining and also useful when if want to add a skirt to complete your outfit for lunch in a restaurant, or the stroll home. Felines are favoured this summer when it comes to sunglasses. If large cat eye lenses are too much, why not try a kitten shape. More subtle, but, with a smaller, girly flick at the corners, no less chic.

The most important aspect of choosing your swimwear is to firstly discover what you want from it. Are you an active holidayer or will you mostly be lying on the sand? Would you prefer to be diving in the waves or leisurely lapping the pool? While style is paramount, confidence should always be top of your swimwear shopping list.
