Thirty-seven emerging fashion designers set to graduate from Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in a few weeks presented their final collections in three shows, on April 24 at the River Rock Casino.
The all-day affair was not only the culmination of months of hard work, but four years of intensive technical and design training that preps students for successful careers in the fashion industry.
Each line was created, from start to finish, by KPU fashion students. The collections ranged in style from plus-sized athletic wear to clothes built to withstand a zombie apocalypse to modest beachwear and luxurious lingerie. Each show included fashions for men, women, and children of all ages, body types, and lifestyles.
“There was a lot of great energy and a mixture of excitement, nerves and emotions backstage. It’s great seeing everyone come out to support us after four years of hard work and dedication. It was surreal to finally see everything come together,” said Shelby Gillingham, whose line NVRLND features feminine but practical motorcycle wear for women.
Not only was The Show an opportunity for the students to celebrate their graduation, but it provided an ideal venue to show industry representatives and potential employers their design, fashion, creativity and marketing skills.
In attendance at one or more of the shows were Chip and Shannon Wilson; representatives from Tamoda Apparel, The Show’s presenting sponsor; media; and various fashion industry professionals, in addition to representatives from KPU, and Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux, who modeled fashions for female wheelchair users in all three shows.
