Michael Costello collection hugs right curves

Designers came from as far as Istanbul and as nearby as Santa Monica to show their collections during Los Angeles Fashion Week, which ran March 9-18.

Then there was former valley resident Michael Costello, who made fashion headlines when he dressed Beyoncé in a white lace gown at the Grammy Awards. His MT Costello ready-to-wear range included burgundy gowns in stretch satin, va-va-voom curve-hugging strapless gowns in red velvet, black lace gowns, black beaded dresses with an Art Deco vibe and a handful of leather pieces, some with all-over perforations, others with laser-cut designs.

The Michael Costello made-to-order collection was dominated by icy white, body-conscious dresses in lace, beading and chiffon. The standout silhouette, whether in peekaboo lace, mesh or both, was the curve-hugging hourglass that flared out at the bottom to fishtail effect, just like the one Beyoncé wore.

The colors of Pantone

Color authority Pantone has released Pantone View Home + Interiors 2015, a guide of major color trends expected to influence the home and interior marketplace.

The palettes are a mix: one group of seven colors has earthy tones with beiges, dusty violets and grays, while another contains playful vibrant tones of pinks, blues and greens. What this collection shows is that color rules are no longer rigid, and the color and coordination of the home is by far a more creative process.

Designer heads Journelle

Rania Abu-Eid, a head designer at Victoria’s Secret’s high-end collection, is joining luxury lingerie company Journelle. Abu-Eid, who spent almost eight years at Victoria’s Secret, will direct Journelle’s first private label collection to be released during the holiday season.

Journelle successfully launched a small collection of silk pajamas last year. While there are no previews of the new label yet, we’re sure there will be good tidings come December.

Take a bow

Rihanna earned an icon award at the American Music Awards last year. Now she’s receiving a similar honor from the fashion world.

The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc., announced that the 26-year-old pop star will receive the CFDA Fashion Icon Award on June 2 in New York City.

The award is given to one whose style has made a tremendous impact on pop culture around the world. Past recipients include Lady Gaga, Iman, Kate Moss and Nicole Kidman.

Rihanna will launch a three-date co-headlining tour with Eminem on Aug. 8 in Los Angeles.

The new four-eyes

Warby Parky has opened another brick-and-mortar location in New York. The Upper East Side saw a soft opening of the eyewear retailer last week in a space that once housed a century-old pharmacy. Most of the original architecture has remained intact, including its second story, making it Warby’s first two-story shop. While valley residents will have to make due with the online selection or visit L.A., rest assured that New York is well stocked.

Dressed for success

Roger Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, wants to play well and look good. He has a popular line of tennis apparel, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour often sits in his box at Grand Slam tournaments. Federer said he’s learned a lot about fashion during his career.

“My advice probably is you’ve got to make sure you wear the clothes and not the clothes wear you,” he said. “Don’t wear something you totally feel uncomfortable with, but take some chances. Play around a bit.”
