CJ, SMG Relationship Blooms With Chinese ‘Flowers’ Shows

HONG KONG – South Korea’s CJ EM is to co-operate with Chinese satellite broadcaster Dragon TV to produce local versions of CJ’s content in China.
First up is a Chinese version of popular travel-reality show “Grandpas Over Flowers” and a spin off “Sisters Over Flowers.”
“Grandpas,” which airs on CJ’s tvN channel, features four senior citizen former actors as backpackers who travel to foreign locations. Showing on the same channel, “Sisters” uses a similar format with a quartet of younger actresses.
The two companies say they will work together on joint research and development of TV contents, and the mobilization of the production resources of Korean dramas. Further details were not available.
Dragon TV is a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group, with coverage reaching one billion viewers in China.
SMG and CJ previously established live events unit United Asia Live Entertainment, and China Arts and Entertainment Group, and produced having already produced a Chinese remake of the Korean musical “Finding Mr. Destiny” and the original Chinese musical “The Princess.”
CJ, Korea’s largest media and entertainment groups, has made considerable efforts to establish itself in China. It is one of the largest foreign cinema owners in China, produced audition show “Super Diva” in 2012, and also participated in the local production of the variety shows “Superstar China” and “The Romantic.”
In film, the company last year had a major hit with “A Wedding Invitation,” which it produced and distributed with Chinese partners.
In 2014, CJ EM is looking ahead to joint film projects such as “The Fist,” “Pyeongando,” and “Love and Lingerie” in China.
United Asia Live Entertainment is working to produce Chinese versions of the western licensed musicals “Mamma Mia!” and “Cats.”
