The Oscars: Red carpet hits and misses

Who was the fairest of them all? Amy Adams styled herself, Kate Hudson channelled Faye Dunaway, Cate Blanchett wore a nude Armani, and Jennifer Lawrence let it slip, says Rachel Marie Walsh

Lupita Nyong’o made jaws drop in this Prada goddess gown, accessorised with tiara headband and a turquoise cocktail ring. The plissé train sparkled like a Disney princess’s. The best supporting actress described the gown’s colour as “a blue that reminds me of Nairobi.” Micaela Erlanger, her New York-based stylist, has done a fantastic job throughout this awards season.

Amy Adams styled herself, choosing Tiffany diamonds and a Gucci Couture gown in sapphire-blue satin crepe with a subtle train. This tuxedo-inspired number was a style departure for the star, who is usually an ultra-feminine dresser.

Kristen Bell made the most of her petite frame and porcelain skin in this silver-grey gown by Roberto Cavalli. The corseted bodice laces up the back lingerie-style, which was a big trend on the spring catwalks.

Kate Hudson channelled Chinatown-era Faye Dunaway in this sophisticated Atelier Versace gown. The shoulder-pads swept into a cape, which looped behind the waist and left an open back. This was a stunning choice and my favourite.

Penelope Cruz is radiant as always in make-up by Charlotte Tilbury and Chopard diamonds. The draping on this blush-pink Giambattista Valli dress makes it look quite awkward, especially as she also had a wrap to manage.

Cate Blanchett wore a nude Armani, which managed to look forgettable, despite being piled with raised sequins and Swarovski baguettes. Her chandel earrings were fabulous. The best actress nominee said the dress was “heavy, but I love it.”

Jennifer Lawrence fell over in her Dior couture dress again this year and it only makes us love her more! Her fire-engine red gown is another amazing Raf Simons creation for the French fashion house.

Julia Roberts’ Givenchy is low-key and lovely, with lace inserts and a peplum waist. Julia is never one to pile on accessories, but she picked gorgeous Bulgari baubles for the event.

Jennifer Garner sparkled in Oscar de la Renta. Metallic embellishments are clearly a big red-carpet trend this season. Jennifer has towering Brian Atwood heels on.

Anne Hathaway’s studded Gucci gown is far cooler than anything we’ve seen her in before. New stylist Penny Lovell (who also caters to Rose Byrne) is clearly a good influence.

The Wolf of Wall Street’s Margot Robbie’s black Saint Laurent dress, dark brows, and plum lips made for a strong look. This dress is plain from the front and she is smart to pose this way.

Sandra Bullock was queen of the night in this gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. This is classically beautiful, but her hair and make-up are modern and fresh — a red-carpet pro.

Angelina Jolie’s Elie Saab gown was not the most glamorous look of the night, but the metallic beading makes it special. Top marks for her gorgeous eye make-up.

Three cheers for Pharrell Williams and his Lanvin suit. This was not a safe choice, but he stayed true to his personal style and, alongside his wife, Helen Lasichanh, looked slicker than ever.

Jared Leto cut a dash in his skinny, black-and-white Giorgio Armani suit with burgundy tie and pocket square. He’s 42? He looks younger than his My So Called Life incarnation.

Leonardo DiCaprio wore his trademark black Armani suit and who can fault it? If he were an actress, he would never get away with relying on the same look, time and again.

Matthew McConaughey is a well-established acting talent, but screams “Dolce and Gabbana model.” The Dallas Buyers Club actor looked handsome in a white tux by the Italian design duo.
