ABBOTSFORD — The crowd seemed almost as skimpy as the uniforms, but the debut of the Lingerie Football League in B.C. was loud and full of energy at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre Saturday night.
The predominantly male crowd was at half capacity in the approximately 7,000-seat stadium, but came complete with women dressed as angels selling programs and at least one guy holding a beer in one hand and a sign in the other that said, ‘See you at church tomorrow.’
The home team, No. 1 ranked BC Angels, ran away in the second half of the game with a 41-18 win over the No. 3 ranked Regina Rage.
Co-MVPs of the game were Stephanie Manou and Mary-Anne Hanson who performed like veteran football players despite never having played tackle football.
After a 45-minute delay, following an involved series of stretches and warm-up drills, the action began well past the expected start time of 8 p.m.
The boisterous crowd immediately connected with the home team and cheered the Angels through touchdowns, big hits and even several shoving matches that broke out throughout the game.
Several fans were overheard at the game saying the football itself was of surprisingly decent calibre.
There are 12 LFL teams in the U.S. and two others in Canada; the Saskatoon Sirens and the Toronto Triumph.
The BC Angels will play the Sirens next on Sept. 1 in Saskatoon before returning to the AESC on Sept. 29, when they take on Toronto.
