A 1,901-acre blaze north of Warner Springs was about 60 percent surrounded early Saturday evening, a fire official said.

Residents were allowed to return to about 200 homes authorities evacuated Friday, said Roxanne Provaznik of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

A lightning strike sparked the blaze on Thursday as temperatures climbed to 99 degrees and humidity dropped to 18 percent, fire officials said.

More lightning strikes were reported in the area Saturday afternoon as firefighters worked through thunderstorms to contain the fire, according to a firefighter at the scene.

Chihuahua Valley Road remained closed to most traffic Saturday afternoon, Provaznik said.

Two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze, Provaznik said. As of Saturday afternoon, the cost to fight the fire was an estimated $1.5 million.
