How to show your bra and still look classy – A little lingerie can go a long way

Too much bra can be trashy, but a little flash of lace or tease of what’s underneath can turn an average Saturday night outfit into a show-stopping look. Here we outline five tips for showing your bra while still maintaining class and sophistication.

1. Stand by your decision!

It’s never a good look if it appears as if you’ve ‘fallen out’ of your dress. If you want to flash a little lingerie, choose underwear that flatters your outfit and let the glimpse of material appear deliberately done. This straightforward flash of flesh shows that you’re wearing your look with confidence and intend for it to be seen, thus making it instantly sexy.

2. Opt for colour and lace over smoothness and shape

Whilst nude bras and shape-wear can be a lifesaver for certain outfits, their point is NOT to be seen. Flesh colour bras look clumsy when on display, and shape-wear is always better as a secret enhancement rather than on public showcase. Embrace this season’s pastel and neon trends, and add a flash of colour to an off-the-shoulder top or a whisper of lace to a classic fitted shirt.

3. If in doubt, keep it classic!

If you’re an exhibitionist, the temptation may be there to reach into the back of your draw and pull out the most expensive, ‘all guns blazing’ bra you have – we’re talking 1/4 cups, extra padding and decadent embroidery. Keeping things simple is a good idea: experiment with a classic black lace bra, and build up to more vibrant shades and embellishments as your confidence grows. Save the super saucy pieces for the boudoir, and let this subtle peek of underwear be a prelude rather than the main performance.

4. Embrace underwear as outerwear

Lingerie-style looks for evening dress have been a trend for some time, with styles coming a long way from the conical one-pieces of early Madonna videos. Many high-street and luxury stores now feature beautiful bralets and basques, designed to be worn outside the boudoir. If this trend seems a little intimidating, a long-line bralet is a perfect first step: team with a classic pencil skirt and layer under a fitted blazer or jacket.

5. Straps first, cups second

If in doubt, experiment with revealing the straps of your bra before flashing your cups or cleavage. Today, many department stores sell decorative bra straps which can be hooked on to your favourite strapless bra to add a touch of sparkle. This can be the perfect way to keep the support of a full bra, without looking frumpy. A lace or broderie anglaise strap can also look pretty peeking out from an off the shoulder top or showing through a sexy sheer shirt. Experiment, and wear your look with confidence!
