Low student attendance at football games may be a problem at The University of Memphis, but by offering of a free student-designed t-shirt to attendees cheering on the Tigers, Tiger Athletics is trying to change that.

Tiger Athletics’ marketing department, along with campus student organizations, created the Sketch the Shirt design competition as a way to build hype around the season, get students involved and increase student attendance.

University of Memphis students submitted their designs to Tiger Athletics’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. Entrees were formatted to be converted to JPEG files and could only use two colors.

“The goal was to increase student participation and attendance,” said Student Government Association president Tyler DeWitt. “We could have picked a random design but I wanted to make sure this was about the students. This is going to be a student tradition that displays the talent of our students.”

The winning design was chosen Friday, August 19 by a student panel with representatives from SGA, Blue Crew, SAC, IFC, Pan-Hellenic, and NPHC. Representatives narrowed it down to the top five designs, and then discussed the pros and cons of each one before deciding on a winner.

“The panel was looking for something creative that would get people’s attention and find something the students could identify with,” DeWitt said.

The winning shirt was designed by Terrance Price, senior graphic design major. Price used Adobe Illustrator to create his design, which he describes as a “classic rivalry shirt.”

”My inspiration was the Jay-Z song ‘99 Problems.’ I thought it was a good idea to play off of, but also applied to the different issues a team would face with a new coach, new players, and the things a team goes through at the beginning of a season,” Price said.

Prodigy Promos in Utah is distributing the 5,000 t-shirts with Price’s design ordered for distribution at the upcoming Mississippi State game.

“That’s a little above the capacity of the student section,” said Brandon Hays, Director of Marketing and Promotions for Tiger Athletics. “Our goal is to fill the student section for the first home game.”

The shirts will only be available to students who attend the Mississippi State game Thursday, September 1 at 7 p.m.

“It came down to the students,” Hays said. “We wanted to give the decision back to the students, give them back some of the ownership of the game.”

Price will receive a framed shirt presented to him on the field at the Mississippi State game, an announcement of his winning design on the Tiger Athletics’ Facebook and Twitter account, and use of the Tiger Athletics Marketing and Promotions’ luxury suite with parking, food and drinks for him and 15 friends at the Tigers’ next home game.

“It will feel great seeing 5,000 people wearing my design,” said Price. “I love doing things for The U of M; I also designed the basketball homecoming shirts last spring. It’s a great feeling to know that I did that design I see everyone wearing it. I can’t wait.”
